Blockchain For Everyone, reviewed
By @SimonCocking review of Blockchain for Everyone: How I Learned the Secrets of the New Millionaire Class (And You Can, Too) by Sir John Hargrave. Hardcover – August 6, 2019, available from Amazon here.
From the author of Mind Hacking and founder of Bitcoin Market Journal comes the first book to explain the money-making secrets behind bitcoin and blockchain in a user-friendly format.
When John Hargrave first invested in cryptocurrency, the price of a single bitcoin was about $125; a few years later, that same bitcoin was worth $20,000. He wasn’t alone: this flood of new money is like the early days of the Internet, creating a new breed of “blockchain billionaires.”
Sir John has unlocked their secrets.
In Blockchain for Everyone, Sir John reveals the formula for investing in bitcoin and blockchain, using real-life stories, easy-to-understand examples, and a healthy helping of humor. Packed with illustrations, Blockchain for Everyone explains how (and when) to buy bitcoin, cryptocurrencies, and other blockchain assets, with step-by-step instructions.
Blockchain for Everyone is the first blockchain investing book written for the layperson: a guide that helps everyone understand how to build wealth wisely. It’s the new investing manifesto
Firstly this is a readable and engaging book, which already sets it apart from some other recent blockchain related books we have read, some of which were dry, academic, or just plain argumentative and dislikable. Hargrave recounts his story well, and in an interesting way. No god-like premonitions, and no mega billions war chest of bitcoin, rather someone who became excited by the technology and is frantically trying to work out how to move his business into this area. This is all the more relevant as he outlines how his previous source of revenue was gradually drying up as more and more companies took a lot of previously outsourced content related work, and did it inhouse instead.
Hargrave’s tale is entertaining and self-deprecating. While he has got the bug for crypto and blockchain, not all of his associates have, and it does send out mixed signals to existing clients. As, on one hand he evangelises about this new technology, while at the same time is trying to chase down existing, non blockchain related work. His anecdotes about slow to non paying corporate clients is an identifiable one, as they mess you around, and often, ultimately never actually pay you for your time and work done.
As Hargrave moves ever deeper into this space he takes you along the journey, describing many of the interesting, colourful, and occasionally completely scoundrels he encounters. His description of a self-described global crypto summit, actually less than twenty people in a dingy room does help to illustrate the wild west elements that still accompany this interesting, but still rough at the edges community.
As he explained in his own words “I wrote it as a story, a hero’s journey of our adventures through the great blockchain boom and bust, and the great prize that was won. ” (See the indepth interview here). We also asked him who the intended audience was, he explained “it’s a story about personal transformation. I believe that the world moves so fast that we are all called to constantly reinvent ourselves. We no longer have one career: we have many mini-careers. BLOCKCHAIN FOR EVERYONE is my personal story of transforming from a comedy writer to a leading blockchain expert: the laughter, the tears, the excitement. It’s a story that will resonate with anyone in today’s job market.”
In this context it makes sense to take onboard books like this, as they are outlining a technology that could well impact on your own job, either directly or indirectly. Hargrave’s narrative aims to help you learn from some of the mistakes he made, and the outright charlatans he also crossed paths with too.
The title perhaps suggests or implies that by reading this book you will be able to crack the world of crypto too. We’re not completely sure that the book achieves that, however it is written in a way that makes it a pleasure to read, and does back up the overall truth that this is a transformative technology, but also one that is only now emerging from an excessive level of hype, accompanied by a lot of very sharp trading too. Hargrave could very well emerge from this time, and this narrative as a valued and knowledgable voice to listen to and learn from. We enjoyed reading it and would suggest it to other people looking to dip their toe into this interesting, but at times excessively talked up world.
