YouTube has removed videos advertising the essay writing service EduBirdie following an investigation done by the BBC last week.
The BBC investigation discovered more than 250 channels and over 1,400 videos with over 700 million views promoting the Ukraine based essay writing service EduBirdie.
The company says that its services are useful for “research into the subject, generating initial input for further reasoning and citations comparisons of key points of view on the subject and general reasoning; Paraphrasing in accordance with major educational standards as well as tailored to your college/university guidelines for plagiarism.”
The ad’s appeared in a range of YouTube videos from gaming to fashion related content with about 30 of the channels promoting EduBirdie believed to be British and Irish.
Following the BBC’s investigation last week YouTube notified creators to say that it would take down any videos that didn’t comply with its policies.
Although selling the papers isn’t illegal it does go against YouTube policies which state that promoting “Academic Aids” which they define as test-taking and academic paper-writing services are prohibited.
EduBirdie is run by a company called Boosta which operates several online essay-writing companies. Boosta told the BBC it could not be held responsible for what social influencers say on their channels.
YouTube has so far pulled down hundreds of videos which advertised EduBirdie, a move which has left many creators annoyed at the platform and questioning why YouTube allowed them to publish the videos in the first place.
