Great interview with Rick Calvert, CEO of TBEX, the future of travel Media. Rick introduces his upcoming event TBEX Europe 2017.
When is it on?
The event is Oct 3 – 5 in Killarney Ireland.
How many years has it been going?
TBEX has been held in the US since 2009 and in Europe since 2011.
What was the inspiration to start it?
2009 was early days for travel bloggers and a woman named Kim emailed six of her friends to ask them if they would like to come to her house and stay for a few days to talk about Travel blogging. 150 people ended up RSVPing to come. So Kim contacted the tourist board in Chicago and TBEX was born.
What exciting things can people look forward to for the 2017 version?
Some great educational presentations from Dave and Deb from The Planet D (one of the earliest and largest travel blogs) http://theplanetd.com/ and 50 other amazing speakers. Lots of opportunities for attendees and sponsors to network and do business and the incredible trips Failte Ireland has put together for attendees both before and after the conference.
What opportunities are on offer for people / startups / investors and companies attending?
We call TBEX “The future of travel media” for a reason. Helping content creators and travel brands reach travel consumers using today’s cutting edge technology is what TBEX is all about. For example one of our talks about how Facebook is incorporating machine learning and the importance of images and video into their algorithm will change the way people find content via Facebook and will have a major impact on which creators and brands are reaching the broadest and best focused audiences.
What tips would you give to people attending to get the most out of it?
Come early and stay as long as you can. Bring lots of business cards and do not be afraid to approach anyone at the conference and strike up a conversation. It is a very friendly group of people who are all passionate about travel and they love talking with their peers.
How can people book tickets / when does it usually sell out?
They can register at http://tbexcon.com/2017-europe/
This event will sell out by mid September.
