What Smart Buildings can offer for 2020 and beyond with Siemens in Zug

Smart Buildings from Siemens in Zug

With 379,000 employees located worldwide, revenues of €83bn, and a net income of €6.1bn. the Siemens group of companies can make a rightful claim to lead the world in electrification, automatisation and digitalisation.

Outside it was over 30 degrees Centigrade when visiting the new Siemens Campus in Zug, Switzerland this summer. Inside there was a perfect calibrated temperature for a modern working environment.

Welcoming our small press group, Cedric Neike, Member of the Managing Board of Siemens and CEO of Smart Infrastructure, spoke about the global role Siemens plays in leading in Electrification, Automatisation and Digitalisation. Megatrends, such as Urbanisation, Demographic changes, Climate Change, Globalisation and Digitalisation, will bring about fundamental changes. Work, life and living will become more integrated and new ecosystems will emerge as people and things become more interconnected.

Proud of the 172 year old company, Cedrik explained that “Siemens gives back to society probably more than any other company.” And how Siemens is leading the global digital challenge giving examples of installing an energy system in the delicate biosphere of the Galapagos Islands – and the plan to create a smart city, Siemensstadt, in a suburb of Berlin.

The Siemens campus in Zug is a reference project that illustrates the opportunities of digitalization in building technology, energy efficiency and future-oriented working.

Opened in December 2018, the Siemens Zug campus features an office building with 1,000 work spaces and a newly constructed production building. The campus is one of the first new projects to use Building Information Modelling (BIM) for design and construction. The complex is equipped with building automation, security and fire safety technology from the Siemens Smart Infrastructure Company. A particular emphasis is placed on sustainability and energy efficiency of the new constructions.

“A smart building is flexible, it learns from previous interactions and it continually adapts to the needs of building users, actively contributing to their success”, explains Christoph Leitgeb, General Manager of the New Campus.

Digital Twin

The Siemens Zug campus is one of the first new projects to use Building Information Modelling (BIM) for design and construction. The digital twin – a 3D model of the building, enhanced with technical information relevant for later operations – is the foundation for efficient, cost-optimized and forward-looking building management.

Building automation

The campus complex is equipped with building automation, security and fire safety technology from Siemens SI. For safety and fire protection applications, 1350 sensors have been installed in the office building. There are 650 sensors in the office building for energy and comfort applications. For the Enlighted IoT platform, there are already 170 sensors installed, with another 600 to come as more floors are being prepared for Enlighted and the Comfy Workplace App.

Workplace experience and space efficiency

The Comfy workplace experience App seamlessly connects employees with the building. Staff are empowered to control aspects of their workplace environment (temperature and lights), space availability and booking, work requests, maps and amenities. There is a room reservation system for demand based room control and digital signage.

Sustainability

Particular emphasis is placed on sustainability and energy efficiency of the buildings. The office building meets the highest requirements of the LEED standard, earning it a Platinum certification; the production building meets the criteria for LEED Gold certification. An integrated building automation system with energy optimisation based on the Desigo CC integrated building management platform controls the energy consumption and all the disciplines in the buildings.

Energy-efficient heat pumps use water from nearby Lake Zug as a heat source and for direct cooling. The campus buildings depend on no fossil fuels to generate energy. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems are equipped with heat and cold recovery systems. The buildings have green roofs, with the office building using circa 1,500 m3 of rainwater. A photovoltaic system on the roof of the production building is in operation since the spring of this year.
