An online petition which calls for the resignation of Ellen Pao as Reddit’s interim CEO has now attracted over 150,000 supporters and is growing rapidly since the dismissal of a key administrator at the website just a few days ago.

The change.org petition describes a lack of confidence in Pao, who petition organisers accuse of ushering in a “new age of censorship” and are concerned for the future of Reddit. The petition was launched three weeks ago and following the alleged firing of Victoria Taylor, one of the site’s highest profile administrators responsible for running the infamous AMA’s, the signatures shot up from 16,000 to over 150,000.

Taylor was not only responsible for overseeing the AMA part of the website, she was also the site’s director of talent and a key administrator in the general running of Reddit. Following her dismissal, a number of subreddits were made private in protest. Many of the subreddits had several million subscribers and while some of them are now back online again, moderators felt it was necessary to make some form of a stand.

Taylor’s departure is not the only complaint many in the Reddit community have about Pao’s leadership abilities, Reddit moderator Gilgamesh explained in an online post.

“As much as Victoria is loved, this reaction is not all a result of her departure: there is a feeling among many of the moderators of reddit that the admins do not respect the work that is put in by the thousands of unpaid volunteers who maintain the communities of the 9,656 active subreddits, which they feel is expressed by, among other things, the lack of communication between them and the admins, and their disregard of the thousands of mods who keep reddit’s communities going,” Gilgamesh wrote in a Reddit post.

Pao has apologised for the circumstances surrounding Taylor’s departure saying that:

“We handled the transition in a way that caused some disruption, and we should have done a better job.”

However there is a clear level of discontent among users, not just for the dismissal of Taylor but for the lack of leadership Pao has shown so far. Reddit has been considered an area where free speech is key and nearly anything goes. As a result there are now subreddits for all kinds of different topics you can think of that you would not see appearing on any other websites. However there is clear concerns over censorship which many people feel Pao and her team may be trying to enforce.
