Nest Cam with floodlight (wired) reviewed

We look at the latest new product as part of the Google Nest range, Nest Cam with floodlight (wired).  You can see more about it and details on how to buy it here.

Nest Cam with floodlight (wired) reviewed

This is Nest’s first floodlight camera and it makes sense for them to supply this option. The fact that it is wired will require some thought about whether it will be the right option for you. Naturally battery operated for outside can be a pain if you have to replace batteries in the middle of winter, during a howling storm.

As often it tends to be the time when batteries fail on an outdoors device. Wired therefore is a good option as an alternative, though you will need to think through if you have a suitable electricity source, or if you have to open up a hole in the wall to bring it through, which will not work for all locations.

You will have to sign up for Nest Aware too for it to deliver all the functionality on offer, which is another factor to consider in the ‘optional – but necessary’ aspect to this device. You will also need the Google Home App, to be able to access and adjust the options and to review footage. The data is encrypted as it travels from the device to the cloud which is good, though it might also make sense to keep an eye out for any potential stories about breaches or exploits.

The footage is quite good, and does have the fun, cool features of being able to distinguish between different types of moving bodies, animals, humans, etc. The light is bright and shines widely and effectively. Some may feel that the cost is at the upper end of the range for similar products.

Perhaps Google’s thinking is that if you have already bought previous Nest related products, then you are already invested in the product range, and therefore less likely to mix and match with other products by competitors. If you can live with the higher price then this is a good product, solid, well made, with a good brightness for the area you want to illuminate.

Shine a brighter light on what’s happening. A floodlight meets a security camera meets intelligence. Built-in intelligent alerts help you to know and see what’s relevant. Tell the difference between people, vehicles and animals. Make the floodlight yours. Create routines and adjust brightness, sensitivity and how long the light stays on.

Security with smarts

Because we’re all overloaded with notifications every day, our next-generation cameras and doorbell are made to send you the most helpful alerts. They detect important events that happen in and around the home, you can even create your own custom zones to cover the areas you want to be notified about, including alerts for people, animals and vehicles — and in Nest Doorbell’s case, also packages. Our new cameras and doorbell can do this because they process what they see on-device, which means more relevant notifications and added privacy and security. On-device processing means that all of this works right out of the box, no subscription required.

More versatility for your home

Nest’s new camera and doorbell line are truly made for every home. Battery technology allows you to install Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell nearly anywhere in your home — not just where there’s a power outlet or existing doorbell wires. The wire-free design makes installation even easier, too. And for those who prefer the option to wire their cameras, we’ve  added the ability to wire the battery-powered Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell. The Google Store is stocked with accessories for Nest Cam and Nest Doorbell so it’s easy to install them where you want.
