National Library to announce top ten websites chosen by Irish public for preservation in web archive

The National Library of Ireland (NLI) will announce the ten winning websites, chosen by the public, which they believe best record Irish life in 2016 and remember the events of 1916 at a special awards ceremony at 1.45pm, tomorrow, Tuesday, 13th December in the Seminar Room of the National Library of Ireland, Kildare St, Dublin 2. The winning websites will be preserved in the NLI’s National Web Archive.

Speaking ahead of the Web Archive Awards ceremony, Dr Sandra Collins, Director of the National Library of Ireland said: “‘Remembering 1916, Recording 2016’ is the NLI’s largest and most ambitious web archiving project to date, with over 600 websites archived this year which can be accessed openly online, anywhere in the world. We look forward to announcing the ten websites, chosen by public vote, at the Web Archive Awards tomorrow. We are delighted that we can archive these modern Irish memories for now and future generations to share.”

The project is part of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme and NLI 2016, the commemorative programme in the National Library, supported by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.

Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys TD will officiate at the awards ceremony, and John Concannon, Director of Ireland 2016, will MC the event.
