HMD Pulse Pro, is it a selfie-lover’s new best friend?

We look at the new HMD Pulse Pro, pitched as the phone to use for a selfie-lovers. See more about the phone on their website here.

HMD Pulse Pro reviewed

First up, when looking at the website, one of the things that impressed our testers and reviewers was the company commitment to sustainability and the ability to fix your phone if needed. When we think of those phones, from that fruity company in particular where, the moment you open up the back of the phone, you have then voided the warranty, the HMD approach is a breath of fresh air. They are not necessarily the first to market to go down this path, but their website suggests that they have thought through this policy choice, and aim to give it more support than mere lip service.

Our testers liked the look and feel of the device. The price point is also a good one too, at the lower end of the market, and with the clear road map for how to fix parts if needed, it is aiming to position itself as a phone that stays with you for more than one season. In many ways this is the key feature that our testers were most enthused about. For sure the selfie blurb is the PR team’s attempt to pin something new and unique on the phone, but really, in many ways the fact that it is made by the people who made Nokia phones, and their commitment to a more sustainable type of phone. Well these all seem like far more significant, desirable and generally strong features for a new phone on the market.

The ifixit website is easily accessed and well provisioned. This does help offer a joined up way to keep your phone running if it suffers any bumps or bangs. The selfie option does of course work as you would hope, but mainly this could be a positive step forward for much wider reasons than just this element to the phone. Our reviewers enjoyed playing around with it, and have marked it as one to watch going forwards.

We make phones that last for years

Our aim is simple: we want to make phones that stick around. No, actually – we want to make phones that you want to stick around. Phones that are tough, fun, secure, fast, and affordable. All of the above. The whole package. The real deal.

Sustainability at every level

Our approach spans the whole lifecycle of our devices: we make devices that last; we help keep devices in use for longer; and we harvest recycled materials – then we do it again.

“R” number 1: Repair

If your car breaks down, you don’t drive it straight to the junkyard – you try to get it fixed. So why should you have to buy a brand-new phone if the screen cracks, or if the battery runs dry?

We’re making phones that you can fix yourself. You don’t need a degree in engineering – just some tools, spare parts, and free-to-access guides from iFixit.

“R” number 2: Reuse

Buying refurbished devices is a way to save natural resources and some of your own money at the same time. It’s as simple as that. Our refurbished devices are all tested to ensure they perform as good as new. They’re even backed by a year of warranty.

“R” number 3: Recycle

We look at recycling at every level, from the build of our smartphones to the packaging they come in. And, we have a few recycling programs in place that allow us to reuse raw materials, and in some cases, entire working parts. What is old can be made new – and that’s what we strive for.
