New Haikubox Uses Artificial Intelligence to Identify Bird Songs, Chirps and Peeps

Loggerhead Instruments is thrilled to introduce Haikubox, which uses exclusive artificial intelligence technology to detect and identify backyard birds.

It can be challenging to build the knowledge of individual bird calls and many birds are often camouflaged or are too shy to visit bird feeders to confirm identification. This innovative product recognizes various bird songs and chatter, offering birders an easy way to “bird by ear.”

“It is truly fulfilling to learn about different bird species, the variety of their songs and calls to each other,” said the President of Loggerhead Instruments, David A. Mann.

“There is a sweet and special sense of meditation when listening to birds singing. Bird lovers who want to know more about the birds around them are alerted when interesting bird species are identified nearby so they can go outside to find the songster and become more connected to nature.”

The Haikubox ensures never missing a bird. For instance, a bird lover might not realize that a neighbourhood Barn Owl had been singing all night.

Haikubox will send an alert with the first “hoot” and users can listen to recordings and view audio spectrograms (visual representation of sound) through the app or website. Haikubox functions 24 hours, 7 days per week to collect every song and chirp.

Customers can learn more about their birds’ migration patterns, when they are active and their changing seasonal behaviours.

Each Haikubox owner will be a citizen-scientist and part of a vast network collecting the largest dataset of bird behaviour ever assembled.

They will contribute to research on such issues as the impact of climate change, habitat loss, pesticide use and other human-caused environmental changes through a unique data-sharing partnership with the K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
