Most graduates entering the job market have high expectations and ambitious career goals, which helps motivate them to push themselves harder to help their progression.
What would it mean for the job market if new graduates were less motivated? We might be about to find out.
In order to better understand the challenges and opportunities facing graduate jobseekers, Debut and the Institute of Student Employers have posed a series of seven big questions asked by employers to over 2,000 students and jobseekers.
The survey reveals how COVID-19 has impacted how students are feeling about getting a job and illuminates some potential challenges the job market may face.

Two-fifths of students believe they will “never have their dream job” and 57% reported that their ideas about their career have changed since the pandemic.
The survey did reveal some positive thinking, with 42% of respondents reporting that they were confident they would find the job they wanted quickly after leaving education. However, this could be due to the student’s changed expectations.
Debut also spoke to some students about their experiences, and the results can be found here.
One of the respondents said the pandemic had changed their plans due to the fact they have not been able to work a part-time job, therefore have not been able to save enough money to relocate once they finish studying.
Another respondent reported that they were willing “to take any opportunity that comes my way”, which indicates that this year’s graduates are going to be more flexible than ever.
Some of the key findings of the survey are:

Michele Trusolino, Co-founder & CEO of Debut says:
“One of the most desirable traits in graduate employees is their hunger for success and ambition. It often makes up for a lack of experience, someone who is hungry to learn and has not yet picked up any bad working habits is really attractive to employers. Ambition and enthusiasm can tip the scales for graduates who are going up against more experienced candidates.
“Two-fifths of graduates surveyed said they no longer expect to have a job they love. This is a very troubling statistic for employers and graduates because passion and ambition are two very important factors for the advancement of the job market.
If employees are less motivated to apply for dream jobs, either because they don’t think it’s possible or they are worried about job security, then there may be gaps in the market.
“This may also lead to less new business ventures being undertaken and may ultimately stall the development of some industries. The effects of the coronavirus pandemic look set to last for years into the future, even if everything returns back to normal.
“However, it is not all doom and gloom because there are a lot of industries which are unexpectedly flourishing at the moment and this will provide new opportunities to graduates.”
