We review the new ASUS ZenFone 7 Pro which has just been released, see more on their website here
It is never all about the camera, but in some ways for new phones it is the level of performance that we are most interested in. As you may have heard the ASUS ZenFone 7 Pro has plenty of camera action going on. Including the popup selfie camera option. On one hand this seems very self absorbed, but perhaps if you are an avid instagrammer, selfie sharing kinda person, then this could be perfect for you.
For the pricing and packaging that you are paying for this phone, you would expect the camera to be pretty good. From the road testing and experimentation that we have spent on this phone we have to say the results look pretty impressive. It handles well, captures a good range of colours, and then offers a wide range of settings and tweaks that you can apply in the pro settings. We set the various photo fans in our house loose on this phone, and they came up with an impressive range of images. They were all happy with the quality of the images and all found the phone easy to use and navigate.
It will take time to drill into the settings to really get the best from this phone, but it is clear that the gap between conventional DSLRs or mirrorless cameras continues to narrow and phones like the ASUS ZenFone 7 Pro are very much in the vanguard of this charge.
We were concerned that a pop out self camera is a piece of moving equipment that could wear out, snag or jam easily. So far it does seem quite robust, and the manufacturer claims suggest that it is built to pop in and out many many more times than you will ever use it over the lifetime of the phone. Time will tell on this one of course.
You do get a lot of phone when you buy the ASUS ZenFone 7 Pro, and it doesn’t quite sit easily in your front pocket. There can be a sweet spot in terms of phone size, screen size, and portability. We’re not completely convinced that the ASUS ZenFone 7 Pro is the optimal size for easy transportation in a trouser pocket so you may have to adapt your usage patterns to find the optimal way to carry this phone around.
Overall it is a decent piece of kit, great camera, good battery life, solidly built, and, for those who need really high res selfie imagers, this might be the phone for you.
Below are some more details about the technical specs of the cameras
The main camera is a Sony IMX686 64 MP high-resolution wide-angle camera with Quad Bayer technology and enhanced light sensitivity for stunning photos — day or night.
The secondary ultrawide-angle camera is powered by a Sony IMX363 sensor with dual-pixel phase-detection autofocus for maintaining an ultrasharp focus on subjects, and this camera supports up to 4 cm macro photography for incredibly detailed close-up shots. The third camera is a telephoto camera, which enables 3X optical zoom, up to 12X total zoom with optical image stabilisation, and seamless transitions between cameras while recording.
ZenFone 7 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 5G Mobile Platform with up to 8 GB LPDDR5 RAM and up to 128 GB UFS 3.1 ROM.
