Aldi joins the race to the bottom with a 7″ Android tablet for €99.99

If you are looking for a cheap Android tablet for Christmas, Aldi have you covered. This week a 7″ “Medion Lifetab” goes on sale in their network of stores. As you’d expect for €99.99, the tablet is not rocking the latest hardware or even software but it’s hard to complain at this price point.

The specs of the device are as follows:

  • 1,024 x 600 pixels Multi-touch display
  • 1.6GHz Quad Core processor
  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
  • 2 integrated cameras – 0.3MP front webcam with integrated microphone and a 2.0MP camera on the rear
  • Wifi 802.11N
  • USB host function and other connection options such as Bluetooth 2.1
  • Dimensions: approx. 192 x 122 x 10.8mm (W x H x D)
  • Weight: approx. 310g
  • Range of pre-installed apps such as Kaspersky Tablet Security (test version for 30 days), LIFEPLAYER, Drawing Pad and Softmaker: Open and edit Office documents (30 day test version)

Selling cheap 7″ Android tablets seems to be a new trend among the large retail chains. While it’s great to see cheaper and cheaper hardware becoming available, I hope people realise when they are buying these devices that they are going to offer a fairly poor user experience compared to the more expensive options available on the market.

The tablet should be available in your local Aldi store today.
