Agile Product Management: Why Product Managers Fail and How to Succeed

Agile Product Management: Why Product Managers Fail and How to Succeed

By Payal Goyal

What do you think it means to be a product owner- not just a product manager, but an actual owner of the product?

If you Google the term, you will find a lot of definitions online. The best way of defining a product owner or product manager is a person who is primarily responsible for developing a product that meets the vision of the company.

When it comes to acting as an actual product manager or owner, you need to think of yourself as a member of your agile development team- not a product manager outside the unit.

Unfortunately, a lot of product managers often misunderstand and neglect this part of their role. So, if you are a product manager and looking forward to establishing an agile product management strategy then, you should not commit these following mistakes-

  1. More Talking, Less Listening

A product manager must have learned to be quiet and listen to what is being said by the customers, engineers, salespersons, and executives. As a product manager, you must know how to communicate, negotiate, and efficiently influence more people. Always remember one thing that silence is more potent than chatter, and make use of this strategy.

  1. Losing Focus:

Agile management comes with a lot of advantages. Despite all of its perks, many managers still struggle to show efficiency in this new environment. This mainly happens when managers are plunged into this unfamiliar environment and, they have yet to learn this entirely new approach, as well as the benefits it brings on the table.

When it comes to creating an agile product management environment for your team, you must ensure that your team knows your about vision before starting with the development process. You must ready to provide the answer to every question of your agile development team. A lot of managers ignore this and, fail at the end of the day.

If you are not that much familiar with the agile product development process, taking a course on it would be a great idea. Remember one thing that an excellent agile product manager not only adds a great value to their business but at the same time also empowers employees to follow the right agile approach.

  1. Not Having The Continuous Learning Approach:

Product managers come from different career backgrounds, bring different skill sets to the job. Though one who comes from the sales background would do fine with communication, while another one from engineering background shines at the product development area. Both of them lack specific product management skills. Knowing what the skill that you lack is fine. But, if you continue with the skills that you currently have and don’t adopt the new skills, you won’t be able to be a successful agile product manager. The truth is that most of the organizations don’t provide any training to improve product management skills. It’s your responsibility to enhance your current skills and adopt new skills.

  1. Not Reaching Out To The Customers:

Are you engaging with your customers? If not, it’s high time you should start engaging with your customers.  Try to know customer’s needs which you should communicate to the rest of your organization. An efficient, agile product manager always gives priority to the needs of the customers.

Having the data of your customers will help you know the market better. The best way to collect data from your customers is to talk to them. You can set up meetings, online or offline, and it will help you know the pain points of your customers and what they are expecting from your business so that you can take the best approach to solve the problem of your customers.

  1. Don’t Learn From The Mistakes Of Others:

It is always better to have a mentor or coach. If you don’t have one, then you are going to commit the same mistakes that many people have already done. Don’t do this as it will slow your career improvement and, make you feel demotivated. Get a mentor to guide you, and you will be able to establish an enhanced agile product development approach for your business.

  1. Be A Janitor Of The Product:

As a product manager, you are going to have a considerable number of things that people try to put on your plate. Most of the product managers get stuck in various tactics and cleaning works. A janitor clears other people’s mess, and this is not a situation you want to be in. So, the best approach that you must be strategic instead of being tactical.

Be it providing a dedicated software development service to your clients, selling products through your e-commerce website or any other business; an agile product management approach would be a great help for your business. It will always help you come with an enhanced quality of the product that meets the needs of your customers.
