Daniel Ramamoorthy, tips, speaker
What is your background briefly?
The son of an Indian diplomat, a lion attack survivor (true story), and I get paid to talk! Born into a diplomat family, I grew up moving countries every 2-3 years and now have lived in 10 countries and visited almost 40 countries on 4 continents. I have an Economics degree from Yale University, USA and an MBA from Trinity College, Ireland and have worked for the UN, World Vision, KPMG, a Private Equity Firm, founded my own startups, been an advisor to the Irish National Government, and am currently a professional MC and Speaker on the international conference circuit.
What are you most excited about in the next 4 weeks?
Welcoming on to the stage…President Barack Obama!
I’ve had an unreal 2 years of introducing and interviewing billionaire founders like Sir Richard Branson and Airbnb cofounder Nathan Blecharczyk, recording breaking athletes like F1 Winner Nico Rosberg and FIFA World Champion German Captain Philip Lahm, online celebrities like Jake Paul, grammy-winning artists, aspiring entrepreneurs, presidents and prime ministers from various countries but President Barack Obama…I can’t wait!
Has your life followed a logical and linear path?
Absolutely not! That said, I’m a firm believer that every opportunity, every situation, every relationship molds us and shapes us. It’s our responsibility to make the most of our past to influence our future. I couldn’t bring the energy, creativity, network, strategic thinking, communication and leadership skills, empathy with audiences, and all the other facets of my work without the diversity of experiences that have brought me to the present moment.
1 line pitch for what you are doing now?
Professional MC & Speaker at over 100 events a year on 4 continents facilitating conversations on the future of innovation and technology and exciting audiences to ‘Start Now Start Simple’ in creating a better world for all of us.
How was the last year, what worked well, what didn’t move as quickly as you would have liked?
I am so blessed to say that I am living my best life every single day. Whether you meet me in real life or follow my daily stories and vlogs online, you know the joy and gratitude is real. That said, the last year was tumultuous. After 8 glorious years living in Ireland, my visa was not renewed and I had to unexpectedly leave without saying goodbye to my community, my foundation, and my home. That said, the last 12 months have been my most fulfilling and successful months of my professional career as I fly from the nest and find my wings. Life’s funny that way.
Tell us more about the art of restarting/recreating?
First thing I’ll say is that restarting/recreating is essential for EVERYBODY. While I might have been born into a diplomat lifestyle of constant change, we all now live in a world of constant change. The average person entering the workforce will change careers multiple times in their lifetime, global conscience will change your lifestyle choices consistently in your lifetime, and technology advancement will change your personal and professional life. Everything is changing. The faster you get at adapting and evolving, the higher your chances of survival. How? Simple: be observant, ask lots of questions, test micro actions, and make strategic macro moves.
What are your top public speaking top tips
1. Focus on Story not Statistics. People remember HOW you make them feel more than WHAT you say so in addition to researching and aggregating great content for your talk, be intentional about weaving stories, case studies and props to communicate effectively.
2. Your body language communicates more than your words. How you walk on stage, whether you stand or sit, your hand gestures, eye contact, etc all communicate more about you and your story than your word choice. Check yourself in front of a mirror and get constructive feedback from friends on your body language.
3. Practice. Practice Practice. I’m on stage almost 2-3 times a week but I still practice everything literally from how I walk on stage to the first words out of my mouth (big difference between “Distinguished guests, Ladies and Gentleman, good morning” and “Yooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! What’s good?!?!”) all the way to my closing lines. Practice using the voice recorder app on your phone, a mirror in your bathroom, while taking a shower, while driving, and in front of trusted friends. You can never practice too much.
What are your plans for the future?
My passion is igniting people to Start Now, Start Simple; to help people overcome obstacles in their personal or professional lives in order to help them find purpose and passion. I use my career as a professional speaker, startup coach, recording artist and consultant as platforms for the ultimate goal which is to connect with people all over the world to help them realize their full potential. So future plans include growing the platform and partnering with likeminded people who care about serving others as well as buying an island to build a retreat centre.
How can people find out more about you & your work?
Please please please connect with me online if I can support you in any way in achieving your goals. I still respond to every single email and direct message and tweet personally. You can find me @iamdanram on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube and LinkedIn and find more information on my website www.iamdanram.com
Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked?
Your greatest asset is your time. It’s the only thing you can’t create or get back. Be really intentional about the 24hours of each day and this incredible gift that is life. It’s yours to shape!
