Dr Eugenia Cheng, world renowned maths populariser and master baker, is on a mission to rid the world (and Ireland) of maths phobia. When she’s not baking by the numbers, she’s a concert pianist and also injects her piano playing into her evangelism around maths.
The talk by Dr. Cheng (10 am, NCH, this Friday 16th October) is aimed at transition year and senior cycle students, but everyone is welcome. Tickets are free and can be booked through www.nch.ie or (01) 417 0000.
Author of the widely acclaimed “Cakes, Custard and Category Theory” and with 700,000 views of her YouTube channel, Dr Cheng’s ambition is to rid the world of maths phobia with the mantra ‘if you can bake… you can do maths’, with some concert piano playing as an added mathematical ingredient.
Maths Week co-founder, Eoin Gill said, “We’re delighted to welcome Eugenia Cheng to Ireland for Maths Week. This is the tenth year of Maths Week and over that time we’ve brought the positive message about maths to more than one million people across the country”.
“Dr Cheng’s goal of eradicating the world of maths phobia is exactly what we’re seeking to achieve through Maths Week. So for everyone from the maths enthusiasts to the maths phobics this will be an inspirational event”.
Cambridge educated Dr. Cheng is currently Scientist in Residence at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has been widely published in her own field of mathematics – category theory.
