Women in the London workplace – Richmond is the best borough for career driven women in the capital

The latest research by Cuckooz Nest, a flexible workspace with integrated creche facilities, has looked at where across the capital is home to the highest proportion of women in work and what professions are leading the drive.

Data from the London Data Store and the Office for National Statistics show that 66.5% of all women in the capital are registered as employed, lagging behind the 68.5% across the UK as a whole.

Richmond is home to the highest female employment rate with 77% of all women from the borough registered as employed. Lambeth, Hammersmith and Fulham, Lewisham, Havering, Wandsworth, Merton, Sutton, Bromley and Croydon are also home to some of the highest employment rates for women.

When it comes to pay, Westminster is best for female employees with an average salary of £39,132. Richmond places second of all boroughs for female pay at £38,499, making it one of the best across the board for employment and pay.

The best professions?

Women account for 16.1% of all employees in the Human health and social work sector within London. Women account for 13.5% of the work force in the professional, scientific and technical activities sector, while 11% of the retail and wholesale workforce is compiled of women.

Newham is the worst borough women in the London workspace, ranking top for both employment rate and gross annual pay.

While London is home to a number of hotspots for women in the workplace, their presence and pay still lags behind their male counterparts in every borough.

In fact, the only accolade that London women currently hold over the capital’s men is a higher life expectancy at 84.2 years to 80.3 respectively.

“There are some outstanding women in the London workplace and the city attracts great talent from all over the world, but we need to do more to cultivate this talent and make London a more desirable place for women to work and live.

Maternity leave is one of the predominant factors behind these lower levels of female workers and it is often used as a justification for lower wages. We have seen some movement on this, and flexible workspaces are a great way to get women back into work sooner if they should so choose, but there is still a huge disparity between both men and women.

While Richmond is leading the way for female employment rates and is home to some of the highest pay on offer, there is still room for improvement and other boroughs are lagging way behind which is astonishing in this day and age.”
