Interesting interview with Dr Sandra Matz
1 min pitch for what you are doing now?
I’m a computational social science Professor at Columbia Business School. I study human behavior and preferences, including how psychological targeting can be used by businesses and individuals to make better decisions.
How was the last year, what worked well, what didn’t move as quickly as you would have liked?
Last year was exciting in many ways. I’ve completed my first neuro-imaging study, started a bunch of projects using smartphone sensing data (GPS), and hopefully inspired the next generation of business leaders in the classroom. Getting those exciting projects published in peer-reviewed journals, however, takes forever. From the moment you have a result, it can often still take years before it sees the light of day as a publication.
Why does psychological targeting has the reputation it does?
What are your plans for the future?
Continue pretty much what I’m doing right now I get inspired by people or data sources almost every day, and I never quite know what I’ll be working on the next few months. And maybe take a weekend off once in a while ?
Prof. Dr. Sandra Matz is a psychologist studying human behaviour in a variety of business-related domains – and one of 8 international speakers at this year’s #FastForwardForum. Join us for #FFF2019 in Venice, October 6-8! https://t.co/iOZBrWZKb1 pic.twitter.com/Qg7IPbgX4h

What will you be talking about at this event?
I’ll be discussing why psychological targeting has the reputation it does (Cambridge Analytica scandal) and how we might be able to turn this around to use the practice for good. I’ll also be looking at what we can expect from the future of psychological targeting in the context of education, hiring, health and so on.
The Fast Forward Forum will run for 72 hours from 6-8th October 2019 at the JW Marriott Resort in Venice. For more information see: https://fastforwardforum.eu/
You are what you spend?!
Credit card and ATM records predict your psychological profile.
Great work by Sandra Matz and Joe Gladstone
(Who would have thought those $300 you took out in Soho at 3AM last night would say something about your personality) https://t.co/GMcqPmM08m— Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic (@drtcp) June 13, 2019
What inspired you to attend it?
The event seems to bring together an interesting mix of people who have the ability to really make a difference in the world. Those are the people I want to reach. I want to bring them on board of a world in which we can use psychological targeting responsibly and for the greater good.
Which influencers and websites do you follow to keep up to date with the latest developments?
A lot of my day-to-day is reading academic papers. But I love WIRED, the New York times data and privacy initiative, and pretty much everything that comes out of the MIT media lab.
How can people find out more about what you are working on?
Visit my website sandramatz.com, watch one of my talks, or invite me to speak ?
