Who Are The Other 50? A new interesting Rhetoriq podcast series featuring amazing women in fintech and finance

By Theodora Lau & Bradley Leimer, latest interesting podcast.

Somewhere over the Atlantic at 35,000 feet, I found myself drawn to the movie “A Fine Line.” It offers a painful, – but honest – look at gender inequality. It is a tribute to women who persevered – and documents the stories of women who overcome impediments stacked against them, and,  against all odds, become world-renowned chefs.

According to Bloomberg News, “It is easier for a woman to become a CEO than a Head Chef.”

This is even more ironic given historical social norms, when you think about cooking, this is one function that woman should dominate professionally as they have traditionally overseen this critical function at home – preparing food for their families and carrying the culture of food from one generation to another.

Time magazine published a cover story in 2013 of movers and shakers in the culinary world called “The Gods of Food.” Among the five chefs featured, none of them was a woman. As for the “tree of influencers,” of the 50 chefs influenced by the innovations of these five culinary “Gods,” women were missing in this list as well. The editor defended the story, claiming that the lack of women was due to their lack of reputation and influence in the industry, and that they “did not want to fill a quota of a woman chef just because she is a woman.”

IMAGINE THAT.

If there is an industry that represents the bottom of gender power imbalance, it is likely the restaurant business. It wasn’t until 2018 that the first female chef in the U.S. was awarded three Michelin stars, joining 4 other accomplished women chefs in Europe (to demonstrate the the gender challenge ahead, there are 133 restaurants around the world with 3 Michelin stars).

But gender inequality is more than statistics or sensational headlines. It not only impacts women, but also their families, businesses, and society as a whole. When you uplift women, you introduce more voices, ideas, and perspectives, in what we do and how we do things. As diverse as our customers are, how do we expect to understand their needs if we remain homogenous? How would we bring innovative ideas to modern day banking when we ignore the talents (and the needs) of half of the demographics of our communities?

Coming soon the new Rhetoriq podcast series featuring amazing women

The Other 50 is a new Rhetoriq podcast series featuring amazing women in fintech and finance. It is a celebration of the immense value that each person brings to the ecosystem. We hope their inspirational life stories would guide us to look beyond gender. Every one of us is unique – and we all have a role to play. Together, all genders (a term that is no longer binary), we can create a better and more inclusive society for all.

Let’s give a voice to those who aren’t always heard.

Let’s invite more people to the dinner table; let’s bring rainbow to what is too often a grey sky.
