On the video, it looked bright in Estonia but Liina told me it was raining. From where I write in South West Wicklow (about 100km south of Dublin) it is bright and sunny. I’ve already been for a walk this morning – so invigorating for a Monday morning especially in May where the countryside is positively greening. The walk I take is very beautiful. There are quite a few hills on my walk and as a result some spectacular views.

Where have all the insects gone, bad news for Ireland

It is hard to consider climate change as real when I live in such beautiful rural environs. I hear bird song all around, the plants are growing vigorously, trees are putting on a leafy display and there are insects and warm breezes rolling across the land.

Yet, recent reports point to the utter destruction of our habitats. Here in Ireland 50% of our 93 different native wild bees are in danger of becoming extinct. Of the 212 common birds, the same number are facing serious challenges. And nowadays you can drive for miles without any insects hurtling to a bloody death on your car windscreen.

This is a problem that is reaching danger proportions which led the Irish Government to be the second country in the world to declare a climate emergency. Of course, saying and doing are two very different things and we are at the same time failing badly in our carbon management.

So, while I enjoy my walk – twice today as it happens – I hope it is there for generations to come. I’m going vegan for the duration of this week – Liina already is – and will see how long I can last without meat!
