Hazel Henderson, EthicMark, interview
Interesting interview with Hazel Henderson, who is a futurist and an economic iconoclast. In recent years she has worked in television. She is the author of several books including Building A Win-Win World, Beyond Globalization, Planetary Citizenship, and Ethical Markets: Growing the Green Economy.
What is your background briefly?
I grew up in Britain, emigrated to USA, naturalized citizen in 1963. Environmental activist, author, Creating Alternative Futures (1978), science-policy advisor to US National Science Foundation; Office of Technology Assessment, Technology Assessment Advisory Council; National Academy of Engineering, Committee on Public Engineering Policy (1974-1980), Author, The Politics of the Solar Age (1981) in 800 libraries worldwide in 20 languages
Does it seem like a logical background to what you do now?
Yes! I am a futurist systems thinker and scan societies’ socio-political and technological change for impacts on our common future on the planet.
1 min pitch for what you are doing now?
I founded and am running Ethical Markets Media Certified B Corporation since 2004, tracking the global shift from the fossilized industrial era to the cleaner, knowledge-richer sharing societies of the Solar Age. The global politics of connectivity mean that responsibilities of media and communication to the public interest are crucial, since we all live in “Mediocracies and Their Attention Economies.” This is why I launched the EthicMark® Awards and why our TV series “Transforming Finance” covers responsible investing and technological choices.
Why did you get involved in this area?
Reforming media and communications and exposing the ways they are driven by profit and commercialism has become environmentally-unsustainable and socially-destructive. They are now harming our higher values and posing threats to human potentials and democratic governance worldwide.
Why do you think it is such a powerful idea?
Shaping our communications tools for inclusive public benefit is vital to broaden public knowledge of our true survival and sustainability options on our threatened planet. We need to select technologies for these public purposes and reject those that are not fully assessed for harmful effects or those driven by powerful groups primarily for profit and control.
How can people find out more about you & your work?
My books are in libraries worldwide. My talks, TV shows, “Transforming Finance” and our research on Green Transition Scoreboard® reports are all free at www.ethicalmarkets.com.
Our EthicMark® Awards, past winners and global Judges Panel are at www.ethicmark.org.
We are a global network of networks of like-minded groups working for human development and sustainable, equitable futures. We rely on thousands of voluntary collaborators and share belief that our common future is built with cooperation and sharing of information and resources.
