Great interview with Daniel Seal, founder and CEO of unBound Media, who are organising   Asia’s leading innovation festival connecting brands with disruptive innovation held on May 17th-18th. We spoke with Daniel to find out more about the event and how they ensure a high quality experience for all those that attend.

Can you give us an overview about InnovFest unBound?

Overall, InnovFest is one of the pillar events under the theme of Smart Nation Innovations week 2016.  It’s a really exciting opportunity for multiple parties to come together and move towards the overall Smart Nation vision.

What was the thinking behind locating the event in Singapore?

We were always interested in Asia, and we felt the future was here. unBound Media has organised our own series of original and exciting conferences and events in the digital sector at leading innovation clusters around the world. We were keen to organise a conference in Asia, due to the region’s tremendous growth and strong potential. Singapore was the natural choice, being an ideal innovation hub, with strong technology clusters and a burgeoning entrepreneurial ecosystem.

For those who don’t know about InnovFest unBound, why is this such a great event? What are you excited about this year and what can attendees look forward to at it?

InnovFest unBound is such a fantastic event because, as the tagline states, it is where Asian innovation meets the world. It is one of the largest start-up expos and we will have over 300 start-ups exhibiting in 2016. Last year, we had some 3,000 attendees from around the world, and we are very excited this year, as we have an even more action-packed agenda planned this year.

InnovFest unBound 2016 will be spread across three stages. On the main stage, there is a stellar line-up of global leaders who will share the latest on innovation trends and technology insights.  This includes Dr Vivian Balakrishnan (Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister in Charge of the Smart Nation initiative), Peter Vesterbacka (Founder Rovio Entertainment), Shaul Olmert (Founder Playbuzz), Kee Lock Chua (President Vertex Ventures Management) and Peter Ho (Founder Hope Technik).

On the Future Now stage, we will look at the future of healthcare, manufacturing, cities and finance. On the Forum Stage, we have a focus on the investment, media, fintech and retail sectors. There is also the Start-up Bazaar, where disruptive start-ups will showcase their innovations, the Tech Alley which demonstrates latest innovations being piloted in Singapore and the Unilever Start-up Battle, where start-ups pitch their ideas to one of the world’s biggest brands.

How many are expected to attend? From which countries?

We expect over 3,000 people to attend, from global, regional and local tech communities. From last year’s event, we had participants from North Asia (China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea), South East Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines), Europe (France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium) and the Americas.

The audience include start-up entrepreneurs, innovators, investors, corporations, researchers, academics, government agencies and media owners.

How do you ensure high quality experiences for attendees as events get bigger?

We ensure participants get a high quality experience even as the event gets bigger by developing the right content and format. Being able to attract top notch international experts and thought leaders to speak at InnovFest unBound is one of the best ways to ensure there is high quality content.

We believe in curated audiences, and that 3,000 to 5000 people is around the right sized audience for what we are trying to offer. There is room for all types of conference sizes, but we are aiming to create a
>“Human zoo”. The goal is to create a high quality experience for all of our attendees.
We wanted to be judged by objective, not by size, we want to be judged based on quality.

In terms of format, there are six key pillars of innovations Future Now: Building a Smart Nation; Open Innovation; East Meets West; Creativity in Communications; Internet of Everything; and Connected Customer. These will be happening across a selection of stages, breakout sessions, networking events, competitions and government programmes. Participants can pick and choose which activity they want to attend and move between the different rooms, as relevant.
