First Graduates Emerge from UL@Work's Pioneering Master of Professional Practice: A New Era in Flexible, Industry-Responsive Learning Pic. Brian Arthur
UL@Work at the University of Limerick (UL) has opened Autumn applications for its flexible postgraduate qualification – the Master of Professional Practice (MPP) – designed to meet the evolving needs of today’s workforce. This one-of-a-kind programme allows learners to “stack” three Professional Diploma pathways from other universities over five years, to earn a full Level 9 master’s degree.
The MPP enables professionals to build a multidisciplinary qualification tailored to their career goals. Participants can combine diplomas across diverse fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Human Resource Management, Strategic Leadership, Communications, and more.
Professor Martin Hayes, Academic Lead of UL@Work, said:
“The Master of Professional Practice is Ireland’s first interdisciplinary, stackable master’s degree – and it’s reshaping what higher education can be. It evolves uniquely for each student over time, allowing them to actively decide the direction of their studies and career development. This innovative model empowers learners to shape their own academic journey, deepening their expertise while building the broad, cross-sector knowledge needed to lead in today’s fast-changing world. It’s a powerful step toward lifelong learning and digital transformation.”
Applicants who have completed two Professional Diplomas (or equivalent 60 ECTS Level 9 credits) within the last five years, from UL or other institutions, can enter directly into the MPP. They will earn the remaining 30 ECTS credits by completing a third Professional Diploma pathway alongside a self-reflective professional development assignment.
Programmes eligible for the final diploma include Project Management, Strategic Leadership, Natural Language Processing, and Aviation Leasing and Finance, among others.
This part-time offering is designed with working professionals in mind, with many pathways delivered online. Applications are now open for the September 2025 intake.
