Tyndall Tackles Challenges of IOT at Technology Days

The growing number of internet-enabled devices, coupled with increased data storage requirements in power-hungry data centres, has spurred a need for new ways to generate and manage power and connectivity. Solutions for future internet growth and sustainability, through powering and connecting the IoT, will be addressed at the fourth annual Tyndall Technology Days series hosted by Tyndall National Institute in Croke Park on Tuesday 11 October 2016 from 9.00am to 5.30pm.

“The future internet promises a world of a trillion sensors where objects communicate with us and each other to link our homes, offices and factories to enable a smart, efficient, secure and connected world. However, this vision brings many challenges. Our fourth Tyndall Technology Days conference will address these challenges in two parallel sessions – powering the IoT and connecting the IoT. Topics to be discussed during the open industry Technology day include ultra-low power processing for smart sensors; energy management – generation and storage; energy harvesting; data centres; network evolution and photonic enabling technologies, among others,” said Dr. Kieran Drain, CEO, Tyndall National Institute.

The conference will include two keynotes as well as panel discussions and live demonstrations. The first keynote titled Technology roadmaps powering devices & big data in IoT will be delivered by Dr Steve Moffat, Chief Technical Officer with Applied Materials. Applied Materials are world leaders in materials engineering solutions used to produce virtually every new chip and advanced display in the world. The second keynote titled Enabling the Internet of Things will be presented by Dr Katsu Nakamura, ADI Fellow and Ultra Low Power Technology Group Director at Analog Devices.

There will also be a panel discussion with John Kennedy, Editor of Silicon Republic; Prof. Mark Ferguson, Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Director General and Chief Scientific Advisor to the Government of Ireland, Mr Martin Shanahan, CEO of IDA Ireland, Dr Helen McBreen, Investment Director with Atlantic Bridge and Dr Claire Penny, World Wide Solution Leader at IBM.

Tyndall National Institute is a leading European research centre in integrated ICT (Information and Communications Technology) hardware and systems. Specialising in both electronics and photonics – materials, devices, circuits and systems – Tyndall works with industry and academia to transform research into products in its core market areas of electronics, communications, energy, health, agri-food & the environment.
