Twitter Holds Talks To Acquire Flipboard

This article originally appeared on 60 Second Social.

Twitter has been engaged in an ongoing series of talks to acquire Flipboard in a deal which would value the company at over $1 billion. The talks have been ongoing since the start of the year and are being pushed by Twitter CFO Anthony Noto as the social network searches for ways to increase its audience base and innovate products.

Twitter and Flipboard have partnered on ideas and features on a number of different fronts however the talks are said to have stalled currently. The deal could be significant for Twitter purely from the view of adding valuable experience to the team.

Flipboard would bring an experience product team headed by Mike McCue who was previously a Twitter board member and stepped down from the Twitter board due to increasing competition between Flipboard and Twitter. He has a reputation in Silicon Valley as a product genius and would be the logical successor to Dick Costolo who has been under pressure from investors over recent months.

Flipboard is backed by some of the most prominent venture capitalists with over $160 million in investment however it has been suffering its own growth problems. Is there a way where both services could come together to boost user numbers to benefit large platforms. Flipboard’s user numbers have levelled off recently, the app is no longer installed by default on Samsung phones.

Flipboard are also finding it harder to simply attract audiences on a regular basis and as good a news reader as it is, some people think that Flipboard simply has limited appeal.

Buying Flipboard will not solve Twitter’s user numbers and there is a good chance that many of Twitter’s users could be Flipboard users at present right now anyway. However Flipboard is an attractive acquisition for any company simply because they bring McCue to the table. Any company in the industry would be interested in getting someone with such a strong Silicon Valley reputation on board with their company.
