Trinity launches new regional postgraduate certificate for aspiring entrepreneurs and innovators

Trinity College Dublin has launched a new regional postgraduate certificate aimed at aspiring entrepreneurs, which will be offered through four centres in Cork, Limerick, Galway and Dublin.

The new postgraduate course in innovation and enterprise development is being offered by Tangent, Trinity’s Ideas Workspace in partnership with Springboard+. Tangent is an exciting new initiative at Trinity, supported by Bank of Ireland, that provides cutting-edge innovation and entrepreneurship education; start-up company acceleration programmes, innovation and entrepreneurship community events and supports for fledgeling to mature entrepreneurs all across Ireland and beyond.

According to the Global Entrepreneurship Report, less than half of people in Ireland believe they have the skills and knowledge to start a business. Tangent, in partnership with Springboard+, will be offering the new Level 9 (NFQ) Postgraduate Certificate in Innovation and Enterprise Development, in locations in Cork, Limerick, and Galway and Dublin from March 25th, 2019. The course is open to jobseekers and aspiring entrepreneurs as well as those wishing to pursue further study. The course aims to facilitate personal and professional growth and enable the translation of knowledge and ideas into innovative products, services and policies of the future.

Trinity will host a number of information sessions in March in the following locations;

– Dublin | Mon 4th of March from 1-2pm, and 5.30-6.30pm
– Cork | Tues 5th of March from 1-2pm
– Galway | Wed 6th of March | 1-2pm
– Limerick | Thurs 7th of March at 1-2pm

Gavan Drohan, Head of Student Entrepreneurship at Trinity, commented: “At a time when two thirds of all new jobs are being created by companies less than five years old and new technologies are disrupting mature businesses it is critical we produce a pipeline of graduates with the necessary skills and understanding to succeed in this changing world.”

Dan Rogers, Programme Manager at Tangent, added: “We would like to make the Trinity campus accessible nationwide, and are starting in Limerick, Cork and Galway. We are also offering flexibility to learners with 70% delivery online and 30% delivery in class. The assessment is a combination of individual and team project work.”

The course takes place over 20 weeks, is practically focussed, and encompasses 3 modules. The first module explores Innovation and Creativity (in-class). The second, Opportunity Generation, Articulation and Recognition (online) looks at the traits of the entrepreneur and the third module Enterprise Development (online) outlines the nuts and bolts of setting up a business.

Although candidates typically require a level 8 degree to be eligible, Trinity aims to recognise other forms of prior learning and experience. It is hoped that this course will act as a launch pad, for those wishing to start, re-start or pivot their careers. This course is free for homemakers or those in receipt of jobseekers benefit. A fee of €240 applies to those in employment. A total of 90 places will be offered in the programme.
