Tribe of Hackers: Cybersecurity Advice from the Best Hackers in the World, reviewed

This book was published in 2018 and has been rereleased by Wiley, to bring it to a wider audience, and to also tie in with other related publications, such as the Red Team book, which we will be reviewing also. The content in this book is still relevant however.

The format follows the same template of questions, asked to seventy different influential thought leaders in this area. This approach can work as it is open to every respondent how they chose to answer these questions. Editorially they have also been smart and ensured that where answers were less than optimal or not relevant they are then trimmed back or edited accordingly.

For people looking to learn more in this field, planning to take a course in this area, or trying to work out who are smart and relevant people to follow on Twitter and other social media outlets this book gives you a helpful primer and starting point. It makes sense to use this as a guide, and reference point, and something to dip into. It would be hard to read it straight through from cover to cover, but is a great resource to have near to hand on your cybersecurity desk.

MARCUS J. CAREY is a cybersecurity community advocate and startup founder with over 25 years of experience protecting government and commercial sensitive data. He started his cybersecurity career in U.S. Navy cryptology with further service in the National Security Agency (NSA). He is the co-author of the Tribe of Hackers series of books.

JENNIFER JIN is a communications and marketing professional focused on the cybersecurity, gaming, and tech industries. She is passionate about non-profit work and mentorship, and is the co-author of the Tribe of Hackers series of books.
