Describe the company – the elevator pitch …

Popdeem is a social marketing platform, that allows brands to reward their customers for sharing local experiences. By rewarding customers for sharing these experiences on social networks, brands can turn their loyal customers into brand advocates.

The platform offers a set of social marketing tools for brands to engage users at physical locations. Brands can run mobile promotions that incentivise users to share content on social networks at specific venues. Customers can check-in or share photos on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram at a venue to redeem rewards. Brands can avail of their own custom branded mobile app or integrate into existing location-based apps using the Popdeem mobile SDK.

Additionally, brands gain access to a layer of social insights, that they can use to identify and target customers based on social information such as demographics, social influence and interests.

How are you different?

At Popdeem we aren’t your typical social marketing platform, we are changing the way brands use social media to engage their customers. By making online social interactions a part of your customers experience and rewarding them for sharing their experience with your brand, you build a new, stronger, marketing force.

Advertising and marketing is shifting from trying to get the biggest reach or most impressions to customer engagement and authenticity. Word-of-mouth has been, and will always be, the most powerful form of marketing for any brand. With Popdeem, brands have the tools to drive user-generated content and word-of-mouth from their most loyal and influential customers across social media.

Why will the company / product do well?

Mobile marketing and ecommerce is going through a tremendous amount of growth at the moment, and we believe there is a clear opportunity there to tap into both markets.

Brands around the world are reacting to these developments and subsequently putting massive investment into the creation of new mobile apps in the hope of improving the in-store commerce experience. By using mobile, brands are finding alternative, effective ways to market to  customers, and as this industry continues to develops, more brands will need a platform like Popdeem in order to really engage and understand their customers at a local level.

Not only do we have a really exciting product that is going to change the way these brands do their marketing but we also have the amazing team to execute. Where are you based? How is the broadband?

In the StartLocal offices on Waterloo Road, Dublin 2. We source our own broadband, and it is awful.

When was the company launched?

Popdeem was founded in September 2012, when the co-founders Gav and Richie entered the Telefonica Wayra Academy.

What have been your biggest wins to date?

Our first big win came when we got accepted into the Telefonica Wayra Accelerator Programme, the first one to be run in Ireland. This gave us the platform to kick on with our idea and we successfully launched our own local reward apps with 15 local businesses in Dublin

Following a successful launch in 2013, we secured a €500,000 round of funding from leading Irish investors Delta VC, Enterprise Ireland and a global director from Facebook.

Since then we have been moving quickly, we have built an amazing team and a really exciting product and now we are focused on working with the top brands around the world on some really exciting projects.

What type of people (market segment) are you trying to attract to your product?

We are targeting the big retail, restaurant and hospitality chains that are investing on digital and mobile marketing. Popdeem powers the social layer of the local mobile commerce experience and as the big brands continue to invest in their mobile presence, Popdeem will provide a complete set of social tools to add to their branded mobile apps. We have a range of products to suit different brands in different verticals. We can provide a brand with native Popdeem SDK’s to integrate into their current mobile apps, or we can white-label a set of native of web apps for the brand to launch as a stand alone platform.

Tell us about your team? (which roles did you fill first, which later on? Why?)

Richie and Gav are the co-founders of Popdeem, but their official titles are, respectively, CEO and COO. They eat, sleep and breath Popdeem!

Geraldine is the Community Manager. She is responsible for communicating to Popdeem’s audience on the various social networks, and also for facilitating a fun and co-operative work atmosphere in the office.

Máté is the CTO extraordinaire and organises the rest of the company’s (impressively diverse) developing team:

Ewa, a former architect and air-traffic controller, is the Software Developer

Niall is the iOS Developer and also shares an interesting background in non tech-related activities, most notably race car driving (he won Irish Driver of The Year in 2007)

Will is the latest recruit to the Popdeem team and is interning in as a Business Development Executive, alongside his degree in Food and Agribusiness Management, UCD.

What are you long term plans for your product / company?

In 2015, Popdeem’s primary objective is to work closely with the worlds leading brands and marketing agencies to build vertical specific case studies that can be used for international expansion to the US and the UK. The company plans to double in size by hiring another 6 people this year.

As the mobile marketing and commerce continues to develop Popdeem will become the core social piece of the puzzle. While other companies provide the tools to add payments, loyalty and location services we are solely focused on bringing social engagement into the in-store experience.

What are your favourite tech gadgets and what tech gadgets do you wish you could use to help you?

Richie is a big fan of the newly released wearable gadgets, he says it makes his life easier and more efficient. If we could have anything, I think we would all have to ask for the new iWatches coming out so that we could keep up with our tech savy CEO!

Anything else?

We take great pride in our office space and it’s definitely unlike any other; boasting a range of quirky features including a bespoke mini-fridge, colourful roof installation and of course our beloved Percy (the Popdeem mascot, who loves technology and inbound marketing). As well as bringing in some colour and life, the real effect of these additions is that the office has become a place that all enjoy working in, and fuels an atmosphere of creative and innovative thinking.
