Tech trade shows are the bread and butter of the industry – it’s where we gather to network, pick up new skills and test out exciting new products. Here are five of the best in the world, plus some tips for how to entertain yourself once the show’s finished for the day…
Next on: January 8th-11th 2019, Las Vegas, US
The International Consumer Electronics Show, or CES to give it its better-known name, is the gathering place for the great and the good of consumer technologies. CES has been going for 50 years, constantly setting the standard for the latest, cutting-edge innovations. No other tech show enjoys the kind of media coverage CES does, so it’s no wonder the biggest names (nearly 4,000 regular attendees) in tech flock to it every single year.
What to do on your downtime: This is Vegas, so it’s showtime. The biggest casino city in the world is also home to some of the greatest entertainment acts – in the past, Liberace, Prince, and Elvis have entertained crowds, and today you can see stars from Lady Gaga to Britney Spears.

Every year more than 3,000 tech luminaries grace the RDS in Dublin for Tech Connect Live, the largest technology event in Ireland. A packed schedule sees firms showcasing the latest innovations, a range of great speakers, networking events and workshops and masterclasses. Whether you’re a start-up, supplier or investor, there will be something for you at Tech Connect Live.
What to do on your downtime: Delve into Ireland’s literary past with a visit to the Dublin Writers Museum, which explores the poets, writers and thinkers who have made Ireland the literary heavyweight it remains to this day.
Next on: June 26th-27th 2018, London
Silicon Roundabout, London’s answer to Silicon Valley, is one of the UK’s most important tech clusters and the driving force of the country’s technology output. Women of Silicon Roundabout seeks to focus on the role women in tech are playing in developing London, and the rest of the UK, as a leading tech ecosystem. It’s the place to come to to hear the best speakers, see the best new products and pick up some essential new skills.
What to do on your downtime: The show is held at the ExCel, but after hours head to Old Street in East London, home to London’s actual Silicon Roundabout. Enjoy some art at Rivington Place followed by dinner at one of the hip restaurants on Hoxton Square.
Next on: February 13th-16th 2018, Fort Lauderdale, Florida
If office technology is your thing, head to Florida’s ITEXPO. Last year more than 6,500 delegates attended, checking out the latest technologies at this tech trade giant. This year expect a focus on core themes like the cloud, mobility, cyber crime and managed services.
What to do on your downtime: Fort Lauderdale is close to the Everglades, so for something completely different why not enjoy an alligator tour? Set out on an hour-long airboat tour spotting turtles, exotic birds and alligator wrestling shows.
Next on: October 14th- 18th 2018, Dubai
Gitex is a week-long tech show held in Dubai, a thriving technology centre in itself. Like CES, Gitex has history; it’s been going for 37 years, each time hosting thousands of attendees and welcoming thousands of exhibitors. The event has a whopping 17 tech focus areas, including augmented reality, virtual reality, smart cities technology, IOT and robotics.
What to do on your downtime: Dubai’s known for its architecture, so why not check out the world famous Burj Khalifa, that 160-storey skyscraper.
