We look at the latest book by Andy Cope and Paul McGee, who attempt to analysis and break down what it takes to be happy and mentally healthy in our daily lives. The book is available from Amazon here.
The authors take us on a deep dive into what is happiness, what does not make us happy, what we think might make us happy, and how we can walk a smart line between these different pressures. The book is designed in a fun, bright, cheerful way which works well, to visually illustrate and highlight their points. At the same time is not relentlessly in your face or over preppy / fortune cookie simplistic koans, which we appreciated.
Though the quote about unicorns and diarrhoea could arguably be said to be verging towards that kind of territory. However we liked lots of elements in the book. The Values Challenge, page 135, was thought provoking too, with 32 different values in a knockout draw to see who your own personal final four turned out to be. It was definitely a fun thought exercise, even if ultimately it was hard to chose one value predominantly over another one.
Throughout the book there are similar thought provoking questions, and insights. We realise that not endlessly chasing financial wealth is a smart first step, but Cope and Mcgee ensure that you have a road map and a strategy to actually make further progress towards real contentment and happiness.
