There is a recent analysis on Johns Hopkins Medicine, Social Media and Mental Health Among Children and Teens, stating that, “According to the advisory, evidence suggests that social media has potential to harm the mental health of children and adolescents. The advisory noted that frequent social media use could be associated with changes in parts of the brain related to: Impulse control. Social behavior. Emotional regulation. Sensitivity to social punishments and rewards. Social isolation. Lack of healthy activities. Lack of sleep. Exposure to bullying. Increased social comparisons.”
“Learning to have a healthy relationship with social media is as important as learning to have healthy relationships with food or exercise,” explains Vidal. “Delaying the purchase of smartphones until the child is ready is a good first step. But it’s also important to instill healthy habits in children’s use of screens given that technology — and social media in particular — will be present throughout their lives.”
“Katzenstein adds, “It’s important for parents to model healthy social media use and discuss social media citizenship behaviors with our children, to ensure we are not posting anything we wouldn’t say directly to someone in the ‘real world.’”

What happens in the mind when social media has a negative effect on mental health?
This is the question that should be at the center of care, even as other answers are sought amid the evolving, complex problem.
There are already several advisory and technical approaches that are designed to mitigate the negative effects of social media on mental health. However, even when recommendations are adhered to, and usages are within technical limits, risks may emerge from aspects that are not covered by both.
This means that it is still necessary to know what the mind might be doing, at least a conceptual parallel, to estimate for the users and for loved ones, some proximity to risks.
Simply, showing how contents may be relaying across areas of the mind could result in the possibility to apply better caution, as well as increase intent to pause the current session or take heed in the next.
This will also give regulators, school districts, guides, social media companies better caveat architecture, against allowing an absolute flood of negative mental health that may precipitate from a session.
How? It is postulated that the human mind has four major categories of functions: memory, emotion, feeling and regulation of internal senses. These categories have several subcategories. Memory can be defined as the destination for interpretation, or where information is organized for several sensory inputs, more or less. So, sight, auditory, gustatory, touch and olfactory senses are interpreted by memory.
Memory is where social media contents get interpreted. Most contents often do nothing after interpretation. But for others, they are passed on to destinations of emotions or feelings.
It is when they get there that they can become what is experienced as negative or positive. While the same contents can be seen by many, it will be nothing for some and might be intense or heavy for others.
So, after interpretation – in memory – most times social media contents often attempt to relay to emotion or feeling areas. It is what gets there with certain attributes that may decide if the effect is positive or otherwise.
Already, most social media apps have complex recommender systems, showing people what they like. Sometimes too, they throw in random stuff. Now, looking at what people mostly like, it is possible that for some, their likes may determine how they are happy or their preferences. So, outside of their likes, there could be contents that are counter, which could cause some emotional or mind distress.
Also, especially when people post, with comments, views, likes and so forth. It is possible to place where the mind might go. For example, displeasure, because likes are low or something like that.
Now, making it possible to have destinations and relays of mind as a dynamic flowchart — so that subcategories of functions are displayed then relays between and across them are shown in real-time, with possibility of some estimates — could become a channel of mind safety whenever social media is used.
Simply, what are all the possible combinations for what social media might be or do to the mind: if there are negative comments, or if there is an attack on a favored group or if there is some low interest, or if people pile on someone, or other stuff?
This dynamic flowchart will have two types, a real-time display and then a predictive display, so that some people may go to it, after the fact to see what the mind may be doing, ensuring to find how to take care.
This dynamic flowchart is rooted in electrochemical psychiatry, a division of conceptual brain science that defines the human mind by electrical and chemical signals. Neuroscience has established that electrical and chemical signals are involved across functions.
Conceptual brain science uses what can be proven, to state the human mind and that electrical and chemical signals organize functions. It is expressed in the postulation in Conceptual Biomarkers and Theoretical Biological Factors for Psychiatric and Intelligence Nosology.
It is possible to build a minimum viable product for the dynamic flowchart within a month, say to be ready by September 15, 2026. And then make it a commercial possibility as Q4 begins.
It is expected to have subscription tier, which will be extra from the free tier. The free tier can be paid for by school districts, states, counties, social media companies and others.
The opportunity is to give conceptual neuroimaging – or express a parallel of the mind – to ensure that social media users are better aware of what is happening to avoid negative mental states.
The future is also moving in this direction already, with several lawsuits and settlements. So, the objective is to make this a staple of mind safety compliance, amid burgeoning risks from problematic internet use.
There is a recent [August, 2026] report on Kiowa County Press, Texas researchers study link between social media and mental health, stating that, “Excessive social media use could be harmful for people in their late teens and early 20s. A report from a team at the University of Texas Health-Houston School of Behavioral Health Sciences found higher social media use is associated with increased levels of anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts among young adults.”
“Study participants who used social media for more than six hours a day reported the most symptoms. Temple added the research could not determine if social media use contributed to the mental health problems or if people with mental health issues spent more time on social media.”
“Temple stressed social media is here to stay, and as a society, we need to learn how to regulate it.”
There is a recent [August 2026] analysis in The Independent, I’m a doctor and this is how I came off antidepressants without going on a downward spiral, stating that, “A new report has found that a record 9.1 million patients were given the drugs by their doctor in the last 12 months, an increase of more than 15 per cent in five years. There is a stark regional divide, with antidepressant use highest in North Cumbria and South Yorkshire, and almost double the rates seen in affluent parts of London.”
“Or specifically, what happens when they try to stop taking SSRIs – selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors – the most common type of antidepressant. This class of drugs – you might recognise citalopram and fluoxetine (Prozac) – is prescribed not only for depression but for anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and even chronic pain.”
