The Future of Gaming 3.0 : The Most Prolific Trends in the Industry

The Future of Gaming 3.0 : The Most Prolific Trends in the Industry

By Ollie Mercer

Gaming, as a whole, is bigger than it has ever been before. According to the statistics, the gaming industry made over 130 billion dollars last year. This number is expected to increase by around 10 percent for this year.

Now, one of the ways that this sector has managed to hold the attention of the global population is by constantly being at the cutting edge of technology. Each year, the industry brings something new to the table, ensuring that people are given access to a whole new gaming experience.

On this note, let’s take a look at what the near-future holds for this sector.

The Advent of Gesture Control

Most people are quite familiar with motion-controlled games. Trending games such as Pokémon Go and Temple Run have already made use of this technology. You will also see motion control on consoles from Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. In turn, this has increased interest in a similar idea – gesture control.

Now, motion control is possible thanks to trackers such as gyroscopes, accelerometers, and magnetometers. These allow consoles to track the movements of players and translate them onto the screens. Well, as AR and VR continue to develop, there are more such tools being introduced. This includes eye tracking, location sensing, and perhaps even lip-reading.

As gaming consoles become more sensitive and sophisticated, they may be able to do away with controllers completely. Then, players will be able to control their movements in the game simply with gestures alone.

Cloud-based Gaming

For a while there, cloud-based gaming seemed like a flash in the pan. Projects like G-cluster and GameFly Streaming gave it their best shot but there were just too many obstacles to overcome. This is because, to a certain extent, cloud gaming is tricky.

This is because players need to send inputs back to the cloud server while receiving audio and video at the same time. Considering that the average gamer has low bandwidth and latency to tackle as well, cloud gaming did have some trouble going mainstream.

However, this all looks poised to change. Why? Well, now there are quite a few heavy-hitters involved. Namely, Google, EA, and Microsoft are all hard at work trying to solve the problems that brought the initial project down. What’s really exciting is that they appear to be succeeding.

Now, these developments have yet to be fully released to the public. Nevertheless, it does appear that cloud-based gaming will soon be available to the masses.

8K Gaming

4K television displays didn’t catch on quite as well as manufacturers would have liked. The reason behind this was simple: most people were opting for their laptops, smartphones, and tablets over TVs. So, it would have seemed that 8K TVs were unlikely to make an appearance any time soon.

Well, this would have been true if it were not for gamers. There is no denying that no one else cares more about graphics and resolution than gamers. This is why you will find that even cheaper rigs come equipped with some vibrant display screens.

Thus, it would stand to reason that they would be lining up for 8K TVs. The current gaming trends back this theory up. For one thing, the PlayStation 5 that is due to be released in 2020 is equipped with next-gen AMD chips that can support 8K. The next Xbox has also been slated to have this technology.

To add to this, it is also expected that gaming titles like The Witcher and Red Dead Redemption 2 will be available in 8K format. So, if all of these releases line up, 8K gaming might just become the next big thing around the world.

Open Source Game Development

At the moment, mobile gaming is leading the way when it comes to open-source gaming. However, this is probably a good indication of the direction in which other form of gaming will head as well. For one thing, it greatly increases the potential of virtually every game.

Of course, major game manufacturers will have several details to iron out before such technology is released to the public. Nonetheless, there is a good chance that it may just become the norm in the near future.

These trends show just what the future of gaming might look like. It is clearly poised to be vibrant, exciting, and full of advancements beyond anyone’s imagination. The only way to find out for sure is to stay tuned.
