The ExoGun is a massage gun that uses percussive therapy to relieve stress, tension and pain in your muscles caused by exercise. With Gyms about to reopen it couldn’t have come at a better time to be sent a review unit to try out!

Like many others, with the gyms closed the pandemic has had a detrimental impact on my exercise routine. Going from gym sessions 3 times a week to over a year of lockdowns has had me both excited that things are slowly opening back up equally worried about the impact on my body of the long lay off from strenuous workouts.

Getting back to the gym is not going to be easy so a few weeks ago I managed to pick up an Assault Air Bike which I’ve been using to build my cardio and get the body moving again. So when the ExoGun arrived for us to review I couldn’t wait to put it to the test and see could it help with the burning in my quads!

What’s In The Box

The ExoGun comes in a nice carry case that holds the gun and its attachments along with the charger making it easy to store and transport.

The ExoGun comes with 4 different attachments that can be swapped out easily. There’s a soft touch round ball, a forked attachment, a narrow point attachment and a solid disc which kind of reminds me of the hammer you use to tenderise meat! Just this time it’s you being tenderised instead of a nice steak!

Features and Battery Life

The ExoGun has a digital display on the back face alongside the On/Off button which is also used to adjust the speed of the gun. The digital display shows the battery level and the current speed setpoint.

There are 6 different speeds available to choose from which are cycled through by pressing the button. The ExoGun took about 90 minutes to charge fully. The claimed battery life is a month of use per charge. While I haven’t had it long enough to put this to the test, I have only charged it once in the 2 weeks I have been using it and it has been used regularly.

The ExoGun weighs in at about 1.1KG, it has a stroke length of 16mm and can range from 1600 to 3200 percussions per minute.

What Is The ExoGun Like To Use

The first thing that stands out the minute you use the ExoGun is that it is powerful. After a very short learning curve, you quickly realise where it works well and where you want to stay away from.

Where you have bones that are close to the surface such as your ribs or your elbow or wrist, for example, the ExoGun can have quite an impact so you learn to work the desired muscle while being mindful of where you are pointing the gun and in no time you find a technique that works well.

During my time reviewing the ExoGun, I found using the first or second-speed setting worked best the next day after a workout and as you have healed a little and the muscles are less tender the higher speeds can work quite well.

The day after workouts I was spending around 20 to 25 minutes mainly working my arms, chest and legs with the ExoGun. The results have been excellent. The delayed onset muscle soreness experienced in the following days after workouts is greatly reduced using the ExoGun.

After a session using the ExoGun, once a lot of the tension had been removed from the muscles it also highlighted the muscles that may have been overworked and needed more time to heal. Something that would have been easily missed before when whole parts of your body were just hurting.

I have mainly used the soft ball attachment and where I didn’t feel all the tension was gone from a muscle I experimented with the other attachments. It’s something you need to use yourself to find out what works for you as some of the attachments may be a little intense for some people and the ExoGun needs to be used with a careful hand.

Conclusion

If you exercise regularly you will be only too familiar with the resulting muscle soreness over the following days. Aches, pains and tension that I used to just put up with is vastly reduced using the ExoGun. The big thing for me at the moment is remembering to use it after workouts after spending so long just putting up with these pains.

Once you know that the recovery days will be made easier by using something like this it also allows you to push that bit harder during workouts so I will use it with interest over the coming months to see what gains can be made. I was very sceptical about massage guns in general when they came on the market but my opinion is changing.

The ExoGun is on offer at present and retailing at $159. You can find out more about it here: https://exogun.com
