The Epic Museum has launched a new virtual tour for the COVID-19 generation

Right now during the COVID-19 pandemic, we have alternatives to what we used to enjoy doing. As we can’t go to the cinema, we can stream movies online. As we can’t go to restaurants we can get takeaway food delivered. For those of us who miss going to the theatre or concerts, we can watch live shows online. But what if you miss going to museums, well you are in luck as the EPIC Museum based in the CHQ building has just become the latest museum to become a #MuseumFromHome. They have launched a new virtual tour, bringing the history of the Irish Emigration Museum to our screens.

In the virtual tour, EPIC has chosen a collection of their favourite stories from the Dublin CHQ exhibition. It enables the public to explore the sites of the museum sitting from the comfort of their own homes.

The emigration museum can be navigated in a similar style to Google Maps and Google Street Views. The user can click onto the available points around the space on the screen to learn more as they navigate the rooms.

There are also a number of coloured pins laid out as you journey through the museum. Clicking onto these coloured pins reveals a story inside. The tour is bursting with educational videos, informative audio descriptions based on each gallery, historical images and links to various articles.

The EPIC Museum floor plan can also be viewed as a 3D model. This can be activated by clicking onto the lower left-hand side of the screen.

Making it even more exciting for users, the tour can also be viewed as a VR tour. If you have access to a VR headset, such as the Samsung Gear or Google Cardboard, the tour can become your own virtual reality. Feel as though you are walking through the museum, even from your living room.

The virtual tour will be available online until EPIC can safely re-open to the public following the COVID-19 pandemic.
