Should I pin a tweet?

Written by Paul Dunphy Esquire

Have you pinned a tweet on your twitter account? It amazes me that so many businesses (in particular small businesses) that do not pin a tweet and some of those that do forget to update them!

But let’s start with those who don’t, if you have a business it’s imperative to pin a tweet, for most you get a minute to impress someone looking at your Twitter profile and if they can’t find a pinned tweet telling us more about you and what your latest news/events etc are then often we will go elsewhere to a like minded company who has pinned a tweet with the information they need.

Plus (and most important) on your pinned tweet you can include a video (keep it short) of yourself or businesses, telling us about your business or promotion or event.  If not, a video then use a great image. Worth nothing if you don’t unpin tweet or replace it by a new pinned Tweet, your pinned tweet stays at the top of your feed and on your main page. It won’t show up over and over in the stream of people who already follow you. People must visit your bio to see it.

Pinned tweets work, I have seen time and time again evidence of this on Twitter accounts I run for businesses. Often you may retweet someone else and they want to repay the favour they will go into you Twitter bio and retweet your pinned tweet, if none there, they are less likely to do or will scroll down and retweet a tweet of yours that may not be as important to you, especially if the person retweeting you is influential in some way.  Note, always put the words ‘please retweet’ in your pinned tweet.

You can pin and unpin as often as you like I recommend you do every month or two.  Also, don’t be that business that has pinned a tweet over two years ago and forgotten all about and it’s clearly out of date!
