The Way Work Works

Written by international workforce design and talent acquisition expert Bruce Morton -who has been helping organisations around the world rethink the way work works for the last 40 years!

87% of Millennials’ top priority is to learn and grow – the youngest in the workforce expect different things from their careers, including fun, development, and purpose.

Flexibility and a strong work ethic are not mutually exclusive – In order to attract and retain top talent, brands need to change their work structure to fit around employee lives.

The rise of the ‘talentsumer’ – We need to start viewing employees as consumers of work. They expect the same level of service as they do from their favourite consumer brands.

Companies now need a Work Design Architect – A designated person who understands, designs, and gives strategic advice on the best way to get work done.

Work is changing fast. If you haven’t noticed this already then either you are retired or about to be made so! Morton aims to blend personal experiences with wider industry trends and observations. In his own career he had to change course several times, and for most of us at least a couple of decades or more into our working lives, it is already clear that moving forwards things are going to continue to be very different to how they once were.

At the same time Morton has aimed to dig deeply into the millenials point of view and thought process to ensure that he actually understands different segments of the workforce. Their different goals, interests, and desires around how they want to be treated, and the way they want to work. There are numerous sidebars with interesting, readable examples of relevant case studies and demonstrations of the ideas he is trying to convey. Overall it is a relatively short book, approximately 150 pages, but he lays down enough interesting ideas to ensure you have something to go away and think about.

This is a useful, timely book to be reading. We often found ourselves wishing that more of the middle to senior management that we had to ensure in various multinationals had had the opportunity to read and consider the ideas expressed in this book. Working environments are changing rapidly, and it is important to have a roadmap to ensure your own company has a considered and clear strategy to navigate its own process into 2020 and beyond. You could do worse than read this book for some useful ideas and shortcuts.
