Putting social back in social media in 2020, latest One Vision podcast

Language is more than just a means of communication between people and tribes. It acts as a window into one’s way of living and into one’s thinking. While digital technology has bridged physical distances – full immersion within a foreign country is the only way to truly understand and appreciate the beauty of another culture. Social media has become increasingly important in enabling us to communicate better.

As Michael Skapinker so eloquently wrote in a recent Financial Times article: “A world in which we all communicate through translation apps may, eventually, be more efficient — imagine all those who have to talk English to us today being able to speak their native tongues. But it will also be a world poorer in genuine understanding.”

In many ways, the key to success in social media is akin to learning a new language. While there are likely automation tools that could potentially help you game the algorithms to lift you up the ranks of influencers, what do you actually gain from it – other than vanity metrics that were far from earned? Meanwhile, you are missing out on the opportunity of learning and experiencing something new, and connecting with other humans.

Real engagement can’t be bought

Many companies use social channels and social tools to push their campaigns and thought leadership. But to be truly successful and effective requires more than just broadcasting. Much like an analog conversation, it requires an engaged online community and a thoughtful content strategy. It requires an authentic voice – be it from your own colleagues and team members, or from your true self. Social media is not about pounding on one’s chest to show how great you are; rather, it is about sharing and exchanging – it is about driving value and giving back to your community.

Much like the water cooler in the office hallway, where people casually meet and hold impromptu conversations, social media offers an opportunity to share your point of view serendipitously. The beauty of social media is that the Internet never sleeps; around the clock, you are bound to find another voice that resonates with your content and with your message. Relationships still matter. And this is especially true for conversations on digital platforms. At the end of the day, communication is about people talking to one another, not a monologue.

And no one does this better than Danielle Guzman. If you are passionate about the future of work and gender equity, and if you want to experience excellent employee advocacy first hand, follow her on Twitter and LinkedIn. You will not be disappointed.

In this new episode of One Vision, as Theodora and Bradley chat with Danielle Guzman, Global Head of Social Media at Mercer, a thought leader, and an influential voice on social media known for her authenticity. Tune in for an inspirational discussion on using technology to enable human conversations.
