Parcel Connect, a service that takes the hassle out of online shopping by allowing customers to send, collect and return online goods directly or via their local Payzone shop or other Parcel Connect collection points nationwide, has delivered its one-millionth package at the end of a successful year of growth in 2015. This milestone achievement represents circa €75 million worth of goods moved through Parcel Connect since the fast-growing tech startup launched at the end of 2013.
This milestone follows a steady year of growth for Parcel Connect with a monthly growth rate averaging at 8%, representing an annual growth rate of close to 60%. Latest figures show that the peak Christmas season saw growth in excess of 30%. This growth matched the wider industry, as Irish shoppers continually move online to do the bulk of their Christmas shopping. Recent research by Mediaworks indicated that just 36% of people planned to do most of their shopping in retail stores this Christmas (down from 48% in 2014).
The holiday season was not the only period of substantial growth for Parcel Connect in 2015. The Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping phenomenon saw volumes of parcels nearly double in the first half of the week after Black Friday. This is the first time Parcel Connect has seen such a fluctuation over a short period of time, and it shows that Ireland is starting to come on board with the US shopping phenomenon.
Statistics on geographic breakdown show that the vast majority of Parcel Connect business facilitates online shopping from UK-based retailers such as ASOS, Boohoo and MissGuided, both inbound by offering options to collect from our stores and also outbound through its returns solutions. Whilst Parcel Connect is developing more solutions for Irish retailers to take advantage of its service, the market is flooded with UK brands dominating the ecommerce space and its client profile reflects this. This mirrors a recent global study by PayPal, which found 75% of Irish online shoppers made a UK purchase in 2015.
Commenting on its milestone one-millionth package achievement, Danny Hughes, CEO of Parcel Connect, said: “This milestone is a significant one for Parcel Connect in what has been another year of growth for us in 2015. To have consistent month-on-month growth is a great achievement for us, and we are particularly excited to see record volumes in online shopping deliveries as consumers increasingly see the value of our personalized innovative service to support their order, delivery, collection and returns needs.
He continued: “Looking ahead, we have a clear roadmap that will see us average at least 50% more parcels per week by Q3 2016 and as a result I’m very confident that we’ll reach our two-millionth parcel before October Next year.”
