When and where is it on?
Open Source Summit Europe will take place on 28-30 October in Lyon, France this year, alongside Embedded Linux Conference Europe and a number of other co-located events such as KVM Forum, Automated Testing Summit, Open POWER Summit and others. The full list can be viewed here.
What is it about?
Open Source Summit is the premier conference for open source developers, architects and other technologists – as well as community and industry leaders – to collaborate, share information, learn about the latest OS technologies and gain a competitive advantage by using innovative open solutions. It is an extraordinary opportunity for cross-pollination between the developers, sysadmins, DevOps professionals and IT architects driving the future of technology.
What was the inspiration to start it?
Open Source Summit began as LinuxCon back in 2008. It was started at the request of a large group of developers working on the Linux kernel and kernel sub-systems, who shared with The Linux Foundation that an event targeted to these developers providing face to face education and collaboration opportunities would be of real value.
After LinuxCon launched in the US in 2008, requests from LF members and developers quickly followed for a European version as well – the first of which was held in Prague in 2010. Over the years LinuxCon has grown to include other open source technology areas – cloud computing and containers to name two – and in 2018 the name was officially changed to Open Source Summit to reflect the growing and changing list of technologies covered at the event.
What exciting things can people look forward to?
Open source software and technologies are a leading indicator of where companies are investing resources for technology development. By bringing the latest open source projects and leading technologists together in one place, the event becomes a forum for defining and advancing technology development in the years ahead.
