Microsoft plans to host an Hour of Code event in Government buildings

The global Hour of Code event, run by Code.org is scheduled to take place next week from December 8^th. Today Microsoft confirmed plans to host an Hour of Code event in Government buildings next Wednesday 10^th of December. Hosted by Deputy Eoghan Murphy the event will be open to everyone working in Government buildings.

Speaking about the event Cathriona Hallahan, Managing Director, Microsoft Ireland said: “Microsoft is passionate about supporting campaigns that encourage a greater understanding of technology and in this case the new international language of coding. The Hour of Code initiative is all about expanding the demographic of people who code. While there are many coding clubs around the country catering for students it’s also important that our educators and leaders understand its importance as well. The event planned next week in Government buildings will allow those representing our country to get a better understanding of this increasingly important language. We’re hoping for a full house and an interesting hour of coding.”

Encouraging his colleagues to attend this event, Deputy Eoghan Murphy, said: “I’m really looking forward to the Hour of Code event next week. I think it’s a great idea to help generate wider understanding around its importance in society. While there’s much attention put on coding in schools and through youth clubs there is also a need for the older generation to understand what it’s all about and understand the new language of the 21st century. It should be a good hour and I’m hoping many of my colleagues join the event next week.”
 
In addition to the event in Government buildings many of Microsoft’s employees together with the CoderDojo network, Junior Achievement, Digital Schools and the Arts Council will help to organise and support at Hour of Code events on the 8^th of December and during the week.
