Today RIM announced that their 9900/9930 and 9360 smartphones are the first sim based mobile devices to gain PayPass Handset Certification from Mastercard. What this means is that it’ll allow customers to take advantage of NFC (near field communication) built in to their device to make payments. And, quote: “France Telecom – Orange is the first operator worldwide to have commercial NFC launches in two countries, UK and France, with trials in several European markets” . Hopefully more credit payment services will approve similar devices and maybe we’ll all be able to pay for things with the swipe of our smartphones rather than carrying cards around. I know I’ll be chomping at the bit for this to arrive.
