What was the inspiration to start it?
We know that the implications of COVID-19 will impact islands in many ways, particularly noting public health, self-sufficiency and the economy – tourism being a particularly important part of the discussion. This webinar series was started as part of Island Innovation’s work in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde to compile data on how islands globally are responding to the current pandemic, both in the short and long term.
What exciting things can people look forward to?
Attendees can look forward to insightful presentations from a number of different speakers from islands around the world with diverse backgrounds and professions, about the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on their islands and the approaches underway, either focusing on immediate responses or long-term impact. This will be followed by questions and discussion led by the moderator.
What opportunities are on offer for those attending?
Those attending will be able to participate in the live discussion through the event chat, polls and Q&A.
Who will be speaking?
Speakers announced in the series so far include:
Anaitee Mills, Advisor to the Prime Minister of Jamaica
Dr. Francesco Sindico, University of Strathclyde
Daniel Trigg, Lanzarote Business and Residents Association
Tahirah Banks, Thoughtful Digital Agency (https://beatcovid19.ai/)
Minister Vittus Qujaukitsoq, Naalakkersuisut/Government of Greenland
Mohamed Raaidh, Maldives Integrated Tourism Development Co.
Dr Che Bowen, CEO MDLink (Jamaica)
What tips would you give to people attending to get the most out of it?
To get the most out of this event we would recommend making sure to tune in right from the start and listen to each of the speakers as they all have different insight, knowledge and experience to offer to those watching. Make sure to have a pen and paper at hand to take notes and write down any questions you might have for each of the speakers while they are speaking, as you will have an opportunity to ask these in the second half of the event.
Make sure to participate in the live discussion through the event chat, polls and Q&A. We would encourage all attendees to add their names and social media links/email address in the chat if they want to connect with others/network.
How can people book tickets / when does it usually sell out?
