Irish scientists play key role in Henkel global adhesive technology breakthrough Just 3 grams of new patented glue enough to haul 208 tonne freight train

Irish scientists working as part of a global team at leading chemical and consumer goods company, Henkel, have played a critical role in achieving a significant breakthrough in adhesive technology.

Henkel has developed a new range of Universal Structural Bonders which combine cure speed with durability and the ability to bond almost all substrates, attributes that have been achieved through new, patented hybrid technology. The new technology, which was developed by a global team, was led out of Henkel’s Research and Development Centre in Tallaght, Dublin, where Henkel’s Adhesives Research team developed the original Hybrid technology tools in 2012.

Powered by this new adhesive technology, Loctite Universal Structural Bonders are a breakthrough in structural bonding and tough enough to haul a 208 tonne freight train with just 3 grams and 1 hour of cure.

Commenting on the innovation, Dr Patricia Cullen, Director AG Global Product Development at Henkel, said: “The entire General Industries Innovation team at Henkel in Dublin are proud to have played such a pivotal role in this significant global innovation. This Hybrid Program was initiated to grow Henkel’s market share in structural adhesives by developing a platform of unique hybrid technologies. Working closely with global colleagues, the team in Dublin were instrumental in the delivery of this new & exciting range of products.”

The general-purpose Universal Structural Bonders combine the qualities of different adhesives to achieve bond strength, fast fixture speed and durability.

Developed globally and produced in Dublin and tested on trains in both German and the US, Loctite Universal Structural Bonders provide improved performance on a variety of substrates and the versatility to solve many more maintenance and repair challenges.

Formulated specifically for application in harsh factory and plant environments, they are effective in a wide variety of operating conditions, from temperature extremes to high vibration.

Dr Cullen added: “Loctite Universal Structural Bonders are the end result of hard work and dedication that began in 2012.
