Irish Research Council Welcomes Additional Investment in ‘Frontier’ Research

The Irish Research Council has welcomed a commitment from Government to supporting research across all disciplines in today’s education investment announcement as part of Project Ireland 2040.

The Department of Education and Skills has announced additional funding of €7m annually from 2019 for research, which will support an expansion in the number of awards through the Irish Research Council. A commitment to further develop the ICT infrastructure that supports research in higher education institutions was also announced.

The investment will be made in addition to the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund and other research and innovation investments by the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation.

Commenting today (14.09.18), Peter Brown, Director of the Irish Research Council, said: “The increased commitment by Government to research in today’s announcement is very welcome. The commitment to further invest in developing world-class researchers across all disciplines from 2019 is an important development.

“This investment is another significant step by Government in enhancing opportunities for Ireland’s most talented individual researchers to conduct world-class frontier basic research. Support for individual researchers across all career stages and disciplines is essential to retain excellent people within our research eco-system and sustained investment in this area will support Ireland’s objective to become an innovation leader.”
