Instagram, the Facebook owned photo sharing application has reached new heights as it has surpassed the 300 million account mark, according to a statement from the company today. Meanwhile Twitter has 284 million monthly active users.

While more users on Instagram means there is a higher chance of racking up likes and comments, it also means that there is a potential business opportunity for companies. As the app becomes more popular, companies will look for marketable opportunities via their Instagram accounts.

In order to provide better results for brands, and also to know that the brand you are following is the genuine feed for it, Instagram is rolling out verified badges.

“When an account is verified, a blue badge will appear next to its name in its profile as well as in search,” Instagram said in a blog post today. “These badges will start rolling out in the coming days and will be assigned to public figures and brands that have a high chance of being impersonated.”

Instagram has also been deleting fake accounts or accounts deemed as spam accounts. This could lead to a reduction in your number of followers however the company’s moves should result in more trust among users in the long term.
