PorterShed, Galway City’s innovation hub and coworking space, has launched a ‘Pioc Suas Mé’ booklet with common technology terms in Irish.
Funded by AIB with translations provided by Gaillimh le Gaeilge, the booklet offers a selection of tech words and words relating to the startup community with phonetic translations. The Pioc Suas Mé booklet is intended as a fun way to learn new Irish words that are relevant to the tech startup community in Galway.
Mary Rodgers, Community Innovation Manager at PorterShed, said, “It is important that Irish moves forward with technology. By providing tech words and using them in our day to day dealings here are PorterShed, we are ensuring the future of Irish in a modern tech and engineering focussed Galway.”
While brainstorming terms for the booklet, the PorterShed team noticed that there was no Irish word for ‘coworking’. Gaillimh le Gaeilge worked came back a few days later with a brand new Irish word – ‘obair chomhionaid’.
“We are delighted to have been so influential in the creation of a new Irish word and look forward to seeing it in the Irish dictionary next year,” said Aisling Daly, Community Officer at PorterShed.
Speaking about the launch of the Pioc Suas Mé-Give Irish a Go! booklets in the PorterShed, Bríd Ní Chonghóile from Gaillimh le Gaeilge said,“It’s great to see innovative organisations such as PorterShed using the Irish language in their day to day business.
The ‘Pioc Suas Mé’ booklets are the perfect opportunity to introduce the language to those who have never spoken it in a fun and accessible way. Foireann Ghaillimh le Gaeilge were kept well busy and had great fun working on the new technical terms! Tá súil againn go mbainfidh gach duine sa PorterShed taitneamh agus tairbhe astu!”
PorterShed is the first building in the Galway City Innovation District (GCID). It provides a professional coworking space, areas to host workshops, seminars, events and hot desk facilities, for both locals and visitors to Galway. The facility is currently home to 22 companies and 62 people.
GCID is a non-profit company founded to support innovation, entrepreneurship and job creation in Galway. There are plans for expansion including additional space to allow the area to support up to 20,000 workers.
