Immersive Art Festival, Atelier des Lumières, Paris, October 24th

When and where is it on?

The Immersive Art Festival opens tonight at the Atelier des Lumières in Paris. Irish studio algorithm are debuting their latest creation ‘Portals’ at the festival.

The piece has been specifically designed and adapted for the museum and they’re competing against 11 of the most influential collectives in the world of the digital arts for a grand prize to be announced next week.

How many years has it been going?

Tonight is opening night of the inaugural festival.

Immersive Art Festival, Atelier des Lumières, Paris, October 24th

What was the inspiration to start it?

Organisers say the event provides an opportunity to present digital design as a form of artistic expression in its own right.

The digital works on show are crafted with the audience in mind. 140 projectors will cast interactive animations across a 35,000 square foot canvas of wall, ceilings and floors.

What exciting things can people look forward to?

Algorithm’s piece is the fruit of thousands of hours of labour at their Dublin City Centre studio. Some 246 pixels were rendered into the animation – the equivalent of a feature-length HD animated film squeezed into a four minute experience.

What opportunities are on offer for those attending?

Anyone who happens to be in Paris over the coming days will find themselves lost in the interactive worlds created by the 11 competing artistic collectives.

One of the city’s hottest new attractions, the Atelier des Lumières boasts a state-of-the-art projection setup and pioneering sound spatialisation system that allows the artists to fully immerse the audience in the vivid new worlds they create.

Anything else you’d like to add / we should have asked?

Most of all, this is about highlighting what is possible with these techniques. Algorithm said ‘Portals’ is by far the most complex project they have ever worked on. The canvas is massive and the level of detail is incredible.

The company would love to do something similar in Dublin.

An Irish studio is competing against some of the most influential digital artists in the world at a festival with a difference in central Paris.

The latest mind-bending creation from Dublin’s Algorithm will open to the public this evening at the first-ever Immersive Art Festival in the French capital.

The company is one of 11 chosen from around Europe to present at the festival of light, sound and colour in the monumental Atelier des Lumières.

The huge 19th Century foundry has been re-purposed as a ‘digital museum’ that marries high art with cutting-edge technology. One of the city’s hottest new attractions, it boasts a state-of-the-art projection setup and pioneering sound spatialisation system that allows the artists to fully immerse the audience in the vivid new worlds they create.

Algorithm’s creation is the fruit of thousands of hours of animation and rendering at their Dublin City Centre studio. Entitled ‘Portals,’ the 246-million-pixel artwork will transform every surface in the building – transporting the audience to a lush 3D world with hyper-realistic textures, shadows and sounds.

Creative Director Daniel Staines said: “This is by far the most complex project we have ever worked on. The canvas is massive and the level of detail is incredible. It was a big challenge to pull it off.”

“We have gained so much knowledge in how to approach creating content for a large-scale immersive experience and it has definitely been worth the effort.

“We would love to do something similar in Dublin. We feel that the city is crying out for a space like the Atelier des Lumières.”
