The ADAPT Centre for Digital Content Technology, led by Trinity College Dublin, and Huawei Technologies today announced a new research and development collaboration to advance innovation across the spectrum of video and media technologies. This collaboration will further connect Huawei and Trinity researchers.

China-headquartered Huawei is the world’s biggest mobile telecoms equipment company. The collaboration agreement will bring together academic and business expertise, allowing them work side-by-side to advance new technologies and solutions that will transform how we consume video content. This partnership with the ADAPT Centre has strategic importance for Huawei, who recently chose Ireland for a new video research lab due to the world class expertise within the Centre.

The announcement coincides with the visit of Guo Ping, Huawei Deputy Chairman & Rotating CEO to Ireland. In 2017, Huawei’s R&D investment in Ireland will total to $21 million (€17.7 million), a significant increase from 2016.

ADAPT provides a partnership between academia and industry in the field of digital content technology, leading on ground breaking digital transformation innovations. The academic expertise and commercial leadership brought together by Huawei will ensure people and businesses can enjoy the benefits of advanced video technology sooner.

Speaking about the collaboration, Professor Vincent Wade, Director of the ADAPT Centre said:

“We are delighted to be joining forces with Huawei to bring the future of video to reality. The ADAPT Centre offers industry a unique set of expertise in the digital content space and we are growing international partnerships with world-leading organisations which are providing the basis for significant innovations. The promise of this collaboration has escalated our own ambitions in video content and not only showcases the work of academics at Trinity College Dublin’s ADAPT Centre but also reinforces Ireland’s position as the digital hub for Europe. This collaboration is a prime example of the hugely exciting activity taking place between Irish academia and industry.”

Video is shaping the future of audience engagement. With new digital distribution models and platforms, our consumption of video continues to increase and has dramatically changed the way people communicate and share content and information with each other.

Speaking about the partnership with ADAPT, Derek Collins, Director of Industry Engagement at Huawei said:

“Working with the ADAPT Centre gives Huawei access to leading state- of –the- art collaboration, that focuses on developing next generation digital technologies that transform how people communicate. We believe that both Huawei’s and ADAPT’s philosophy is aligned, in that we want to be the world leading hub of scientific expertise that supports collaborative innovation to unlock the potential of digital content, empower engagement between people and promote creativity. We believe that collaborating with ADAPT and it’s leading researchers will deliver innovative value for both.”
