How to become an Artificial Intelligence (AI) developer in under a year

Machine learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI) are phrases and acronyms that if you’re not familiar with already – you will be, because it’s likely that within the next decade up to 85% of all jobs will be hugely affected or replaced by these algorithms, thats right…. within the next decade you may well be on the lookout for a new job, but it may not be the best time to look – as there will be millions of people also in the same boat, so as they say “prevention is the best cure” and I believe that learning to code now, will leave you best placed in the future.

I tell my 9 year old son almost daily, “In the future either you tell computers what to do, or computers will tell you what to do” he is now one of the top children in the UK for his age group at maths and is getting into coding.
I am far from a pushy parent, but I want to guide and prepare him for the future, as the concept of going to university and having a 30+ years career based on the back of one skill, is not going to happen for his generation as they will need to evolve with new technology and reinvent themselves every 7-10 years.

If you have considered learning to code, but have been daunted as your perception is that it’s difficult or you don’t know where to start – there are many resources out there, including many that are free. Yes it will take time and effort, but so would job hunting in ten years 😉

AI and ML developers are very sought after, as companies and startups clamber to assemble the best talent and you can learn to do it in well under a year, according to data scientist Bargava. You’ll need to put in a solid 10-20 hours a week, but you will learn a lot along the way.

Bargava lays out a six-month, five-step plan for coders to learn about deep learning. If you don’t already know how to code, that’s step zero. Try the free course at LearnPython.org, or shell out $200 for Codecademy’s 10-week Python course.

Then follow Bargava’s steps, which include more online courses, some solo projects, and some extra reading. It may well be hard work, but Bargava says that if you stick to it, by the end you’ll be able to “learn, follow and contribute to state-of-art work in deep learning.”
