How to become a data intelligence organisation, Graham Murphy, Head of Data, 3

What is your background briefly?

I have always worked in data. I started off making single view systems in 2002. I then moved to enterprise data quality solutions, data warehouse development, fraud analytics, data architecture, data governance and then into big data platform and strategy. My most recent roles involved the setup of a CoE for analytics and the delivery of a global GDPR programme that ensured all of the data platforms and operating environments were compliant.

Does it seem like a logical background to what you do now?

Absolutely. At this point I feel I have covered most of the bases in the data space. I would say I have earned my stripes having been part of numerous data initiatives over the last 17 years and I look forward to bringing that experience to Three, helping its evolution in to a data driven organisation.

1 min pitch for what you are doing now?

As Head of Data I am responsible for defining and delivering the roadmap so that Three becomes a data intelligence organisation. This journey starts with building a new Data Management function that has a strong focus on best in class capabilities in the areas of data governance, data architecture, data quality management, big data platforms, business intelligence and reporting and of course – data science. We will align very closely to the overall business strategy to help deliver a better connected life for our customers.

What is your strategy for balancing effective use of data & people’s privacy – especially in the context that anonymised data has often been unpicked to no longer be anonymous?

A good question. We will only use the data we are allowed to use. It is important to me that data protection is part of any data professional’s toolbox. I will ensure the implementation of the Data Protection by Design principle as well as very strict data handling procedures. Three’s approach to anonymisation is that data must be fully and irreversibly anonymised so that, even when associated with other data, it is not possible to identify an individual.
