Google Nest Audio, reviewed

Bigger and more solid than the previous Nest, this one is aimed to be solid, durable, louder and, perhaps, easy to use. We found it scored well on all of those apart from ease of setup, or rather if the devices you want to pair it with are not straight out of the box themselves, then it is not always straightforward to get it all working fast. For new phones, especially those in the Android ecosystem you should have the Nest up and running quickly.

If you are in this subset then this is a nice, affordable sound boost to deliver a better aural experience to your listening activities. As we move far from the days of brutal mp3 musical listening experiences better and better speakers enable you to hear music particularly as you would like to hear it. The Google Nest Audio is also well made, no extraneous parts, and so, with less moving bits, fewer things for clumsy fingers to break or snap off. This is all good, and works well.

In terms of techical specs the Nest Audio is a lot louder than the original Google Home, with the manufacturer claiming it to be 75% louder. Priced at £89.99 or €99.99 it won’t break the bank either, especially as it has enough sound to fill most rooms. You can also stream podcasts through it, which also appeals as we now find ourselves listening to more and more content this way, both from our own awesome podcast (https://soundcloud.com/irish-tech-news) but also many others too.

The Google Home App also offers some interesting functionality when paired with the Google Nest Audio too, and it will be interesting to see what interesting use cases begin to emerge from this additional level of connectivity too. This feature for example is one that will be interesting to monitor ->

Nest Audio adapts to your home to ensure that you’re getting the best sound experience possible.

Te Media EQ feature enables Nest Audio to automatically adapt to the content that you’re listening to: music, podcasts, audiobooks or Assistant. Nest Audio also adjusts based on the background noise in the home, raising the volume so you can hear Google Assistant.

You can buy, and learn more about the Nest Audio here.

Nest Audio comes in two colors – Chalk and Charcoal – and was designed to have a minimal footprint in your home and on our planet. In fact, its enclosure (meaning the  fabric, housing, foot, and a few smaller parts) is made of 70 percent recycled materials.
